View original topic: Alternator - Voltage Regulator wiring headache

I removed my engine and transmission for the first time (at least my first time) so I could get at some broken mounts. I ended up missing 3 wires that run from the voltage regulator to the alternator, and when I dropped the assembly, pulled them apart. I didn't notice until I was reinstalling the motor that they had pulled apart in the first place. Normally I would just hook them back up, but the wire color changed at the terminals that disconnected.

The wires were red, purple, and orange coming from the voltage regulator and down through the engine tin to the alternator.
Is there any way I can test to see which leads are which? The starter got power, engine started, but power to the ignition was being cut after 4-5 seconds. (via the voltage regulator, I believe)

Thanks. Hopefully I can snag the one someone posted for 15. But if not, this one should do the trick.

the neat thing about the new ones is they are flexible and the wires aren't cracked. I don't know about yours but my 1977 one is hard and brittle. Can't imagine what damage it could do if it ever shorted out. We have a new harness to install next time the engine is out.
