I thought one of the reasons for jettisoning the tdi was the excess of torque and the strain it puts on the trans. Doesn't the AAN also produce gobs of it as well?

The petrol turbo version isn't as torquey as the TDI. Also, the 5 cylinder diesel chatter which seems to have a fairly bad effect on the R + G synchro cluster isn't there with the petrol.
I don't have enough money or time to work out all the bugs with running this TDI engine in my van. If I did, I would probably fit an oiling system, dual mass flywheel and many hours on a test bench.
Also, over here the price of diesel is going nuts so any gain you get from going to diesel is eaten away by the price difference at the pump.
The one thing I'm looking forward to is the lack of noise and vibration through the body.

Well the front diff is already sold and the currently 4.86 gearbox will be coming out once I've built the 6.17 replacement.
I might well use the 2.5TDi in a daily run around car as I have the matching 6 speed 2WD gearbox. In a light car with the right gearing, it would do over 50mpg all day long and make a good cheap motor.

After a long weekend, I now have a set of 6.17s to go in with V 2nd, 1.14 3rd and 0.70 4th.
It'll be interesting to see how this drives! I'm looking forward to the petrol though.
Also finally got around to loading another video from last year's Laning trip in the Lake District.

First off, an apology for not having done much on Limey for some time.
It's very easy to get bogged down by the enormity of what I've taken on with converting the roof and starting yet another engine conversion but this is what's happening so on with it.
I've cut the roof brackets out of the remains of the original roof frame so I need another good weather weekend now to weld them in and repair the rear panel.
I've finally got around to putting the VC in the 6.17 front diff, tapping out the casing for the two M6 bolts which hold the diff-lock actuator bracket on. This is an AOL front diff that I've converted from non-diff-lock to diff-lock so the casing has been machined etc.
I've removed the propshaft as I still have the 4.86 gearbox in.
I may fit the AAN into the Bluestar first and get it running as all the work will swap over onto Limey.

Big news.
The engine and gearbox are SOLD!!
I'll be pulling them out in the next month when time allows.
Soooo.....
What to replace it with.
I'm not going diesel again. I want a nice quiet van, less transmission issues and will LPG whatever goes in.
It needs to have atleast 200bhp and 200ftlbs to push the van along well enough.
I already have the AAN engine (Audi S6, 2.2 20V 5 Cyl Turbo) which is currently sitting in the back of the Bluestar. The stock spec for this is 230bhp and 258ftlbs.
The other option would be a Subaru H6 3.0 engine.
You can buy complete cars for as little as £1500 (high mileage admittedly) but £2000 cars are quite common.
241bhp and 219ftlbs.
Both will got in and fit under the lid. Both do around 25-30mpg in their stock vehicles.
I've already built the gearbox which has 6.17 final drive, stock 1st, V 2nd, 1.14 3rd and 0.70 4th so cruising on current tyres will be 2850rpm @ 60mph and 3330rpm @ 70mph or close to.
The Audi engine will cost more to fit due to water to air intercooler and oil cooler.
The Subaru is less in my comfort zone but hey... it's fun learning!

H6 gets my vote!! If you happen to find two cars just give me a hint. I've been looking for cars here in Norway but the H6 is NOT a common engine here. |

Boxer 6 I'm sure would be really nice mike. My second diesel build is under way if this blows up again I may be going back to petrol myself. Lol.
Ps rear springs are spot on. Should really get another set for the panel van.

I am finding myself leaning towards the H6. The idea of not having to deal with a water cooled intercooler and oil cooler and squeezing everything under the lid and and and...
But there is the draw of that fantastic 5 cylinder sound!!
Good to know that the springs are fitted and working Lee... the MAD springs are a definite improvement IMO.

So the engine and gearbox have come back out of the Bluestar.
Aren't skate boards useful!!
At the moment, this is the engine which is going into Limey.
I'd like to go Subaru H6 but I have more parts which work with this engine... and I have the engine!
Looking at the belt arrangement with the engine sitting in the garage, I realise that I'd got it wrong.
This will work better!
So.. swap the vans around...
I've already dropped the engine/gearbox cage off.
I'm tempted to bolt the AAN engine straight in after I drop the AAT down as it'll get it out of the way.
On the 'to buy' list is another SA Bellhousing. If anyone has one kicking around, please let me know.

Well the gearbox is out and cleaned.
I think I've sourced a bellhousing with clutch slave cylinder for sensible money but I'll post the details once it's arrived!
