How much can I safely shave off of the side of the flywheel that faces the transmission? This vehicle isn't going to be a daily driver; maybe 1-3 times a month. I need about an 1/8 inch to fit my bus tranny.

why not use a smaller flywheel like a 215mm one?

Does that flywheel have a 5 bolt pattern?

Yes. Or any other flywheel / clutch combo for 1.7, 1.8 or 2.0 type II. Or relocate the starter ring gear on the 914 flywheel.

install a bus flywheel as they are different from the 914 ones. Don't forget to install a new pilot shaft bearing in the crankshaft for the bus tranny. The 914's need the pilot shaft bearing in the flywheel. On the 914 crank you have to pull the spacer out of the crank to install the bearing.

I would second the idea of a 215 bus flywheel. That is what I went with The flywheel from a 914 is much deeper. The problem I ran in to is the starter gears were in constant contact with the teeth on the flywheel. Also issues with clutch depth. Get a 215 for a bus and have the center hole enlarged for the bearing.
