This thread is dedicated to showing the process of reviving my 69 Squareback as well as to solicit help along the way.
First things first, wiring. The wiring is a mess and since she is going to be my daily driver I want to make sure the electrical is done right. Right now the brake lights, turn signals, and wipers don't work. Each headlight is on their own switch (she can blink!) and who knows what else I may discover is wrong. Needless to say I need to replace all the wiring. Does anyone know where I can get a complete wiring harness for a 69 Square?

| ISPWest sells a complete wiring harness for all carbureted Type 3's for $319.95. If that 69 is still has the fuel injection you've got bigger problems with wiring! |

Is ISPWest the only game in town? Since I'm rewiring the whole car is there anything you guys would suggest I do while I'm at it? |

| Also, can someone tell me about the fuse box. Is it suppose to be in the trunk? |

| What is the difference between a main wiring loom like this one, http://www.jbugs.com/product/WM-311-62-67.html?Category_Code=vw-squareback-wiring-harness and the ISPWest wiring harness that is more than double the price? |

the VOLKSWAGEN SERVICE MANUAL Type 3 1968-1973 by Bentley is our Bible for Type 3 owners. It will tell/show you Everything. www.books4cars.com.
P.S. The stock fuse box is under the dash, but could be in the frunk I guess?
P.P.S. That Jbugs harness doesn't include the frunk wiring! |

It's probably the same part. However you'll probably need to find a fuse box for a type 3, if yours is in the front trunk  (pics aren't loading for me). There is supposed to be a Vintage VW show in Ypsi on May 23rd (mother's day). You might want to attend, and see if you can find some parts there that you need. I don't know yet whether I'm attending, as I'm trying to finish some stuff up around here (I'm northeast of Detroit). There's also the bug In at US 131 dragway in Martin Mi on May 2nd, you might find some parts there as well. Just a thought. |

Okay, so I bought a complete wiring harness and began the install today. I'm green so I'm taking my time. What's really sweet is that my wife is all about the resto and is helping with the process. It doesn't get any better than that! We purchased the Bentley manual and it sure is a valuable tool. Here are some pics. Since the wiring was such a mess (including a custom hack), today was primarily prep work. The only downer was discovering some rust above the driver's side seat rail. Any advice on how to treat the rust?

As for the rust, you will need to learn to weld, or find someone that can do it for you.
Along with the Bentley, I would recommend downloading the wiringing diagrams from the Samba, and taking a copy to your local copy center. Have them printed out in 11 x 17 format, and get the laminated.

Then you are not squinting trying to figure out where a wire goes, and the print out will last.
And can I make a suggestion on your photos. Reduce your resolution on your camera to less than 3 megapixel. Some people on here still use dial-up, and it takes forever to load. |

Yup, and we'll get sick of waiting, and then move on. Or we get a couple of BS pics, then the ones you're asking about will have little red X's in the box. Ask me how I know? I'm one of those dial up users.
But Russ is right, download and save the color wiring diagrams from the Samba, and blow them up and laminate them. They're easier to follow that way. |

| Alright, so today I ran the wiring for the dome light. Not a big task but at least I got something done. I have been dying to wash the car since I purchased it so I took a break from the electrical and pushed her out into the driveway so that I could scrubb away. Her paint has been neglected and the Arizona sun did a number but all in all she bounced back pretty well. I'm waxing the car in the morning. To aid the process I took some time to pull off all her jewelry. I'm crossing my fingers that the shine will come back. |

Okay, the picture sizes have all been adjusted. Thanks Everett! And now on with the restoration...
Here are some pics of the Square, post wash and wax.
Some shine!
Back to the electrical. Oh, and perhaps someone with some history knowledge can shed some light on where this steering wheel came from. It's obviously not the sweet stock set up.
Wiring harness 95% complete! The tabs on the fuse box are broken off so she is just kind of dangling, but at least she looks better than the rats nest I started with. The car also came from the PO with a dash. Installed it, but I'm not sure it's the right year for the car. It looks wierd where it meets the pillars.

A few pics I did up of Bettie! With the help of a little Photoshop magic I cleaned up some minor front end blimishes. A couple things that hit me liek aslap to the face are - the one over rider looks like a snagle tooth. I removed it and am now running a blade up front. And the antenna hole needed plugged.
Plugged antenna courtesy of West Coast Metric and my pocket book.

| That looks like an off the rack Grant GT steering wheel, very popular in the late eighties early nineties. |
