i've been looking for the same for my swing axle conversion... ended up with a 68 bug tranaxle... but no luck on the 64/65 typ3 backing plates and drums... their money!! figured i would go with late model drums instead... depending on where u are, there a few that pop up on the samba from time to time, but the only t3 stuff i found was at ispwest.
i found a guy selling the complete assembly, so the 68 tranny is for sale if ur interested. |

you can use 4 lug stuff and adapter, but they suck. some rims might not fit with the type 3 drums. having had an early type 3, there are only a few places that carry brake stuff for them, ISP west in Carson CA is one, Bill and steves in Downey CA is another, Kymco used to stock T3 stuff, but I don't know about now.
Also, If I remember correctly, the rear wheel cylinders are the same for type 3's 64 to 73 (1 exception, the 65 square S model that I had) I am pretty sure you could use the 4 lug backing plates, and all the 4 lug hardware, with 5 lug drums. (somebody correct me if I'm wrong) bus boys used to have the 5 lug rear drums pretty cheap. |

Somebody here was selling new five lug type 3 drums for like $60.00
each. Any year type 3 or 411/412 backing plates will fit. The only difference on the backing plates is the lack of adjuster holes on the four lug stuff. An easy fix with a drill. The internals are all the same.
And yes, 68 bug axles are the same as type 3`s. |
