well they are both 30 years old as a vehicle model and neither is made anymore, and as of the current trip, the shuttle won't be in service anymore.

Thousands of Vanagons are still on the road everyday.

I say the vanagon kicks the shuttles butt.

NASA will come up with something else, just like VW did... It just won't be the same.

When NASA announced the shuttle retirement, I sent them a nice Email asking for some of the ceramic tiles (to use as a heat insulator on my car).

For some odd reason I never heard back from them...

My question is... who has more into their vehicle. Nasa or a regular Sambanite.

240Gordy Sun May 16, 2010 12:27 pm

seems like now they have their vehicles parked out in the back 40 rusting while when they want to go to their weekend house they have to call a cab, but the cab takes 3 months to show up and costs a couple hundred million for a 2 hour ride.

But it only went on 31 trips.... OK maybe travelling a total of 115,770,929 miles (186,315,250 km).

Somebody do the math and figure out which one requires more $$$ and hours in maintenance per mile traveled.

I'll bet it's close.

Rupture the Fuel system and see what happens____ At least we can pull over.

i know a way to level the playing field: convert a Vanagon for spaceflight.

kinda like the Winnebago in SpaceBalls...

Not a bad idea, I'm always afraid my Westy will self destruct during re-entry.

The tile material is actually very interesting stuff. I saw a demo where they heated a 2" cube of the stuff white hot in a furnace for quite a while. They removed the cube from the furnace with tongs and after a few seconds one of the demonstrators took picked up the cube by its corners. The center of the cube was still glowing bright orange and the corners of the cube were cool enough to hold! A VERY good insulator!

The old ones will probably go to hobbyists, who will create a forum where they greet each other with
"Change the O-rings"!

240Gordy Mon May 17, 2010 5:53 pm

"What's the best replacement engine--a Rolls Royce or a GE?"

Sir Sam Mon May 17, 2010 9:18 pm

I'm pretty sure the space shuttle breaks down less.
