The Riv's look great on the car, very nice. I'm sure alot of us are envious of how clean the body is.
I put a set of 5.5X15 ET40 Porsche 914 Sport Wheels on my 412. I really like the look. Marathon's look good as well.
You are going to have fun re-doing the interior. There are no seat kits available so you will have to either contact Sewfine or find someone near you that does that work (unless you do it yourself).
Is that a cooling system of some kind in the cut out area of the spare tire well? My 412 has A/C but the front end is different and the cooling assembly is mounted differently. I can't help on that one.
It's looking good! |

While it may have seat covers on it, what is the foam and stuff underneath like? Vegas is hot and dry and will FUBAR an interior up even if it doesn't look bad. Dry plastic will crack and crumble in no time.
If you want head rests, find type 4 seats that have them. I thought the brochure for '71 showed head rests, I know the '72 411 wagon I picked up last weekend has the 412 type head rests. |

| I've always thought that VW would have sold many more 411/412's if they had offered different wheels as standard equipment. Anything sportier than what they had. They were marketing the car as an upscale luxury VW but had the basic steel wheels...WTH?? |

I think that VW sold the type 1, 2 and karmann ghia just because they we're great value for money and had a lot of character by there looks.
Type 3 and 4 we're "just" cars, and people saw only the bad things of aircooled VW's (noise, fuel consumers). But VW doesn't know how to sell them... they did not sell themselves...
It was a good change in early 70's to watercooled engines (from commercial perspective) |

My thoughts exactly! Probably a concession to the accountants. I mean even some wider, model specific and more deluxe styled steel wheels would have been something. Damn things have a "sausage balanced on toothpicks" look to me with the stock wheels/tires. And why such a high offset, too? It isn't even necessary.
Anyway, the car is looking great, keep up that momentum! |

We have brought this p on the STF a few times. I spoke to Sewfine about 4 years ago. They have never made 411/412 seat covers....but are willing to. If one of us has a complete seat cover and will send it to them...or better yet the whole seat (to be returned).....they will pattern the seats for about $250-350. Then they will charge about $150-$250 for a complete set of front covers. The rear with folding armrest is so close in every dimension to late type 3 with folding armrest that I know I can modify it in minutes to work.
If we get a group buy together enough...we can bury the patterning costs for about $25 per person...and keep the seat cover and padding costs to essentially the same as a type 3.
I also have an option that will work very well to put Procar seats like this one in....and add the headrest from the stock seats. This seat will attach to the stock seat track and chassis easily.
www.procarbyscat.com/Products_InteriorKits.asp Check out the pro-90 series seat down this page. It many ways its virtually identical to the 412 seat...except for a slightly different headrest.
I will be contacting them to see if they could sew seats together with vinyls and materials supplied by Sewfine....which has most of the factory vinyls and tweeds in stock.
If so....then you could have the rear seat made in the material of your choice from a type 3 pattern....then send the same material to Procar to have them make some Pro 90 front seats for you.
The panels.....I can make factory repro panels quite easily and will be happy to show you how to do the embossing work. I'll talk about the headliner at another time. I have a pretty cool solution but need to test it. Ray |

| Exactly. I don't think that VW knew how to properly market (at least in NA) a more upscale car. Now that I see Riv's on a Type 4 though, it makes me want to get a set! |

Vonkr,
That green is the same as on my old 411. It was so clean save for a little rust behind the front wheel wells. So I took off one of the front fenders to see exactly how extensive it was and----oh shit!! It had become structural by then and showed signs of previous intervention measures. Sadly I had to throw it away (well, I donated it to some worthy society or other---I forget which). God I know there must be something wrong with me but I love those type 4's.
