Hi all, new to the eurovan, but not VW's.

Picked up a 93 eurovan with a blown engine, thinking of doing a swap, has anyone done this and if so what is the best engine/tranny combo to use?

Has an auto now, wondering if I can or should switch to a manual.

Any info is greatly appreciated!!!

Hello and welcome,

There hasn't really been much done with Eurovan engine conversions. The only thing that comes to mind is that Justin at Greaseworks is in the process of putting together a 1.9 TDI Eurovan. He'll be offering the conversion parts to do this.

If you are looking for performance, an Audi 5 cylinder turbo (10V or 20V) can be fitted. There's tons of tuning potential with these engines, but since the EV is front drive, I wouldn't think much more than the stock 230hp of the 20V AAN engine would make sense. I don't think a VR6 would be practical since later EVs came stock with them, and you'd need to upgrade to the later front end to make it fit.

There has been some talk of hot Audi powered Eurovans on motorgeek.com. You might want to check those threads for ideas.

Yes, you can, and you should, if you can find one. Automatics are the weak link in the EV. If you are going to the work to do an engine conversion, swapping the transmission as well is not a lot of extra work. Maybe you could find a rusted-out or crashed 93 with working engine and 5-speed, and just swap the whole engine/transaxle assembly. They come out as a unit anyway. There are a bunch of parts you need in addition to the transmission, so they will all be there in the manual van.

Manual trans is rare in the early models, non-existent in later models, in the USA, from what I have been able to gather (no personal experience in the USA). In Canada, manual was pretty common in 92-93 model years.

has anyone swapped a late vr6 into an early euro IE: into a 93 ive just had so much trouble with the 5 that im thinking the extra work to put a 6 in there might be worth the trouble. love to hear what people are thinking on a vr6 to I5 swap the manual trans isnt an issue im worried about since i lost an auto so i taught myself to rebuild them

The EV was offered in 4,5 and 6 cylinder from new. The VR6 and V6 was only available in the "long" nose variations, yours being a short nose would be limited to 4 and 5 cylinders unless you swapped noses.

Easiest and cheapest would be to put another 2.5L gasser and swap in a manual. Fortunately, it's merely lego to perform the manual swap. You just need the necessary bits.

Tell us more about what you're looking for in your bus. Are you thinking gas only or diesel as well?
