View original topic: Need Help in Identifying the VW transmision in My Garage
doc hopper Sun Sep 12, 2010 10:16 am

I have a rebuilt swing axle transmission sitting in my garage all ready to be installed.... but is it a regular non modified tranny for a bug or a conversion bug tranny for my bus? I can't remember which one I bought as a back up for my VW fleet a few years ago. How can I tell ... by appearance? By axle length?
What would be the definitive clue?

p/n and axle lenght

So.... what would the axle length be if it's for a bus? (and what is p/n?) I'm standing by with my tape measure.

Pull the oil drain under the diff and determine whether the ring gear is on the starter side. If it is it's the bus trans.

You could also check the nosecone. A bus nosecone is different from a Beetle style. I believe the PN is 211 301 211 or something similar on the Bus. Of course you are assuming the Bus nosecone is on the bus trans...

Can anyone tell me what kind of tranny I have in my bus and what the numbers mean? What year and model is it from?

you can look up that 9 digit # in the online parts line. FWIW, the case is the same bug and bus.

No, from here we cannot tell you what the gearing is inside there. With a pic we might be able to tell what kind of axles/ rgears are on it.

Think of this, you have an engine #, and can look it up to see what it came in decades ago. But no guarantees that it is still got the innards as new, it could have been a 1500, but now a 1600. What cam is in there?

Thanks,
I'm not so much intersted in the gearing, but mostly want to know what year and car it came from. I'm pretty sure it is not the original tranny in my 67 bus because I cant find a reverse lights switch on the nose cone, unless the switch was removed and they put a plug in it, which I doubt.
I haven't had any luck online finding a site that has a list of numbers for transmissions.

I asked the same Q for my '64 SC...to no avail. Its not in the technicals.

The type 2 parts reference manual here:

http://oacdp.org/

Will most likely show what range of years and chassi your transaxle case was used in, if you go by the part number on it.

Really though there are two basic stock transaxles.
Split case used up to MAY59 (type 1s only got this after 1960), and tunnel case used from then to end of 1967 production.

Both use swing axles, but some volks have since then have converted the earlier buses to be able to use the later tunnel transaxles in them.

Others have converted pre-1968 buses to use the double CV jointed axle tunnel case transaxle from type 1s that was standard after 1968 here in N. America.
