I was told that the two small holes in the front passenger side door (one centered above the pocket and one centered below) were to accommodate two rifle mount brackets. I'm skeptical as the holes seem too small to support the weight of a rifle, and would locate the weapon in an awkward position making it impossible to open the door. The weapon would also be jammed up against the side of the passenger. Doesn't make sense.

So... Is there a floor mount for the front passenger side just like the front driver's side (as shown above)? And does anyone know what those two little holes in the door are for? The driver's side doesn't have them. Just curious.

might want to keep an extra set of points in your bail-out bag if you run petronix for when the EMP blast hits. We will have the roads to ourselves

on topic: could you just put the drivers floor mount on the passenger side by mounting it upside down?

My understanding is that there is a metal part to hold maps that attaches to those holes.

Lettuce is correct. The rifle mounts are ambidextrous.

Who says? I know of at least a dozen in the moat at Casteel Alden Biesen.

Next time, don't go wild at the vast amount of Belgian beers...

Having both an FAL and a G3 variant, I was excited to get a rifle mount... But that soon led to disappointment when I discovered that the roll bar blocked the barrel on the rear position, as well and anchoring between the two rifle mounts on the driver/passenger position.

So, I did the obvious thing, and bought an Uzi. It's short, and fits anywhere :-).

FWIW I took my son and a friend shooting a while back. My son's Mosin Nagant is far too long to lay flat anywhere in the car, especially with the bayonet attached (it's about 5 feet long from butt plate to the tip of the bayonette) :-) ... and that's how we drove out of town, even hitting the drive through on the way out. Cops didn't bother us, even though we were behind one in the drive through.

Man, I love this state... and 181's... and guns...

Priorities, priorities. Either get rid of the roll bar or anchor the rifle to it.

Im kind of surprised the NATO 181's didnt come with a standard rollbar with provisions for the rifle mounts, at least in the later years.

Up at ft. Drum in the early 90s, at least some units of the Pennsylvania national guard were still using willys jeeps, and they had a humungous roll cage that was almost bigger than the jeeps themselves. and they had weapon mounts modified for them.

Semper_Dad Fri Sep 17, 2010 3:27 pm

181 was replaced by the 183 as early as 1978

The Kubel's grandchild

National Guard always got the Army's leftovers and were generally 10 to 15 years behind in technology

Yarkle Fri Sep 17, 2010 7:41 pm

yeah, I know about the iltis, but there were still 181s in service across NATO until the mid 90s. I was TDY'd to a german mech unit for a few weeks and they had a few 181s in the motor pool still for "retrans" units.

man i wish i could have brought one of those back...

likewise, at the same time, there were still mechanics being issued m3 "grease guns"..WWII vintage submachine guns.

Joe 20 Fri Sep 17, 2010 8:12 pm

It's been a while but the last I knew our tank crews were still issued the M3.

kubelmann Fri Sep 17, 2010 8:21 pm

As a radio repairman, that was my issued weapon but I have been out for nearly 40 years.

Because the 181 was not really a combat vehicle? It had to be simple and cheap.

Lettuce Fri Sep 17, 2010 11:09 pm

A length of tubing with some bends in it and some welds holding it together could not have been terribly expensive

Yarkle Sat Sep 18, 2010 6:25 am

well, this was during the cold war, so if the balloon went up, everyone in europe was going to be fighting, so any military vehicle was going to be a combat vehicle.

im just surprised they didnt make it an issued item for the 181, considering some of the other bizareness they come up with.

as an aside, last time i was near an M1A1, I thought the crews had 9mm pistols and i think there was an M16 rack or two. Now they probably have M4s. Now, M60 crews probably still have grease guns, if any are still in service. dunno for sure, ive been out for 14 years!

Maybe rollbars weren't 'invented' yet or not considered usefull on a small car?

Not positive on this model. I'm guessing an early model FN FAL.

SilverThing identifies this as a HK G3...

I'm going with the FN FAL as the de facto weapon used in a 1970's era, european military type 181.

Only today I read this topic...

The G3 was in use in many european countrys in the 70s and 80s, and still today in use in Portugal...

BNMike Wed Oct 12, 2011 7:24 am

Those rifles in the photos are H&K's.....G3, not FAL's, which were G1's.

You can tell by the magazines and the way the pistol grips are mounted.

Does anyone know where I can get a rifle mount for my Thing, aside from Ralf (shipping too expensive)?
