I finished my Thing a while back and I have a bunch of parts left over. I'm not sure what a lot of these parts are. Can you guy help me identify these? All the parts that are in groups were bagged together, so I am assuming they belong together. Some of the part numbers start with 111 or 113, are these for a Thing (but Thing specific)? I've numbered the pictures so it will help to label them. Thanks!!
#1 Speedo, but is it correct for a Thing?
#2 ???
#3 Misc gromments??
#4 Steel tube
#5 fuse panel, correct for Thing?
#6 Switches, correct for Thing?
#7 bolt and pin
#8 brackets??
#9 Knobs and plugs
#10 Misc wiring and fuses
#11 Tubes
#12 tranny mount??
#13 sheet metal rail??
#14 I know the top parts are door hinges but the rest??
#15 I think windshield parts??
Thanks for your help! I've been lookiing through the "for sale" section and I have been able to find quite a few parts but not these. |

I can help with some of that stuff.
#1 I think that speedo will work, but it's awfully hammered.
#2 I think those rods are for releasing the seat back
#3 keep the bumpers that look like little mushrooms for your rear seatbacks and pitch the rest.
#5 10 fuses is correct for North American Things.
#14 mostly hardware for rear seat backs.

you have a great collection of odds and ends that folks search for. virtual mini gold mine.
here's what I can pick and may not be technical terms.
Thing specific parts begin with "181". all others such as 111 or 131 are crossover to Beetle etc.
photo #2, those are for rear seats. these go inside the seat. the hook is the latch you pull to release the seat back to fold forward. your picture #14 has the springs and other misc parts that go with these.
#3 large diameter solid rubber plug is drain plug in luggage compartment next to gas tank. it takes 2 per car. small rubbers with acorns are for rear seat backs. 4 per rear seat back. they plug in to sheetmetal behind rear seat back. lower rubber pc with spiral form about 1.5" long or so is for front hood bump stop. takes 2 per car. some body or dash plugs in the pic. several metal dash clips. people always looking for these as they get lost in disassembly.
#4 fuel filler neck
#5 not sure if thing specific fuse block. looks like my old one.
#6 ??,
#7 bolt and pin that mounts in trunk through spare tire bracket. these get lost as well. there is a small bracket in top left of trunk if facing in.
#8 hardtop brackets? never seen
#9 body plugs. some appear to be after market
#10 ?
#11 possible gas heater tubes?
#12 tranny mount rear
#13 this protects the wire loom that runs on passenger side of tunnel from dash to rear compartment. it mounts to tunnel. many disappear over time.
#14 lot of rear seat back latch mechanism pieces, brackets that mount on rear cross support that have metal rod that support the rear seats when folded down.
#15 windshield locking/latching brackets, the 2 larger brackets. they mount on lower windshield frame. windshield frame hold down stops that mount on front hood. those are in lower rt of your pic and the small rubber sqs go inside of them.
some of the rear seat brackets etc are in great shape, plating still looks very good.
you may surf The Thing Shop site if you want to get exact names. go to site and just hit search. it will roll you through all 37+ pages. |

1A. Gas Heat Duct Part Heater?, Can’t make out the relative size. Is it big enough to go over the end of the gas heater?
2A. Maplight for Glove pocket
3A. Fuel Tank filler fittings
4A. Yep, E-cable lines, Don’t know if they’re reversible, always replaced both at same time. Somewhere in the back of my mind I remember one being longer than the other.
5A. Most likely for gas heater, I have a 74 so I’m only guessing
6A. Yep, Door stop part. The other is some a washer for securing body to chassis. Called a reinforcement in the part catalog. Item “6” in diagram P/N 311 899 131
7A. Back seat and Seatbelt parts. The blue things look to be Seatbelt hangup hooks. Some appear to broken. The buffer pads are used to hook the rear seat bail into as well as the rear deck and trunk prop rods. The rubber part with the broken legs used to look like this when new. Tossem
8A. Door handle gaskets and screws, Clean them up and keepem. Someday Thing owners will get as anal as some of the bus owners and want only OEM parts. (about the same time that that someone wants to recreate the "factory paint overspray" in the headlight buckets.)
9A. Yep, Dash bumper. Keep it if the securing bolts are good
10A. Looks to be more gas heater parts
11A. Water Deflector Plate, Left and right, go over rear lovers in Engine compartment |

3A i believe the rubbers are seal for the gas heater (havent taken mine apart yet so am not sure) and part of the gas filler tube
10A. gas heater part 5A attaches to it
11A. Water Deflector Plate, Left and right, go over rear lovers in Engine compartment 73 only? |

Well I've finally got tied of moving this box of parts around so I'm going to sell everything above. I have also found more misc parts. I will try and group thing together and post in classifieds. Please let me know if there is anything shown above you might be interested in. I don't want to piece everythign out. If it is in a group of "stuff" I want to sell the whole group.
THANKS AGAIN for all your help identifying these parts. |
