Have you tried a different flasher relay? (any VW 113953227 A or D or 191953227A or aftermarket EP-35 or EF-35 will work. )

Is it both sides or just one that blinks faster? Does it do the same using the emergency flashers?

hello,,with the original flasher relay,, it is fast ,, but if you d,t have the goob bulb light,, it can bee more fast,, example,, in your book if he said 20 amps,, for the flasher light and if you use the 30 amps it well bee more fast,, the relay close with the résistance of the light,,for that reason too,, if you have ,,one light burn,, it well bee more slow,,bb412

a grounded out wire to one of the turn signal bulbs will cause a fast flash.
