The vertical springs looks Too strong for carburetors from Here. Look at the 2 Flimsy springs used on the stock Solex's for a Comparison.

Agreed. That is a severe-looking angle.

Agreed again. Don't be afraid to go light on the springs.

Also, is the cable actually touching the fuel line? Probably want to change that.

Adjusted too far out meaning bring the ball ends in so less thread is exposed?

I'll see what I can do about springs later this afternoon.

Yes, but it's more likely that the springs are too aggressive as Mike pointed out. I hadn't noticed that. Remove the springs and check the movement of the linkage from the middle of the hexbar. If it moves without any binding it's probably the springs.

will do. i'll check it out this afternoon and let everyone know what i find.

In this picture, I see a ball-joint that is at a pretty extreme angle. It may even be binding. Not good. It needs to not do that at any point in its range of motion. If that horizontal post were a little longer, that angle would be less severe.

I also see a spring being pulled around a corner. Also not good.

Some of these linkage systems are not well designed at all. I've seen hex-bar setups for type-1s that actually pull the cable out of the tube at an angle, actually dragging the cable around a corner. I bet that feels great.

Try this. Remove the springs and disconnect the cable. Now manually move the linkage from the idle to the WOT position. Look for points where it binds or drags. Then install the return springs and do it again. The springs should add only tension, no binding. If that is all OK, connect the cable.

I had the temerity to refit a Berg linkage after the joints wore out. It was just a matter of considering all the angles. The result was far better than that same linkage when it was new.

Max, I just read over your linkage page and what I funny ironic was that I was just talking to Steve about possibly adapting or making a linkage system similar to the Gene Berg linkage to fit a type 3. Your page gave me all kinds of ideas. Thanks!

When Steve brought the car back to me today, we found that the linkage was actually flexing about 3/4" in the center when you depress the accelerator pedal. It wouldn't actually engage the carbs until the pedal was half way down. And yes, the small springs I installed were way too tight, so, those were tossed for the original springs that he had. But the main cause of the flexing issue was that the linkage bar for the ICTs was cut short to accommodate the IDFs. In my attempt to temporarily repair the ICT crossbar, it compromised the bar's integrity. Since I can't weld the aluminum bar back together, I threaded the old piece that was cut off, cut the threads off a bolt and threaded it into both pieces of the aluminum cross bar. I then drilled both pieces of the crossbar and inserted roll pins to keep the threads inside the cross bar from twisting. When I was done, the I wrapped a hose clamp to kind of reinforce the joint a bit. It didn't work as well as I had hoped.

We dug up a steel bar that a friend of mine let me barrow until a new bar could be found, but that wound up being about 3" too short as it was from a type 1 linkage kit. The only option we had until either a new bar or a new IDF could be found was to repair the existing cross bar a little better and drive it home and park it until further notice. We tightened the joint a little better and redrilled one of the roll pin holes and then braced the bar with two pieces of 1/8" aluminum flat stock to brace the bar at the joint just to get the car home. I haven't heard if the cross bar held during his drive home or not.

I will hopefully be going out to Pomona this weekend to try and pick up a replacement crossbar for Steve's car.

Keep an eye on those roll pins. Mine wore the surrounding material pretty quickly as it was all just mild (i.e. pretty soft) steel. I finally welded those parts.

got home safe and sound, car is spitting a little oil so i'll check that out tomorrow. i should be able to find another IDF by the weekend, so hopefully won't have to worry about this issue for much longer.

OhHerrooo Mon Jan 09, 2012 3:59 pm

well i've been away from my car for a bit, but i'm back now and ready to get it running again. fixed the oil issue, but it seems i have lost my spark. need to check to see if the coil is getting power before i buy any parts. good to be back guys.

OhHerrooo Tue Jan 17, 2012 3:27 pm

car is alive and running great!

all i needed was a new rotor so i'm good to go. in the mean time i've re-lubed my speedo gears and cable, fixed my broken horn button, bought another interior basket (since mine was in the gf's bug when it was stolen), ordered some parts and cleaned the car up.

next on the list is to finally get my 40IDFs on the car... i'm buying another IDF this weekend to wrap that project up. still have to install my Jim Adney gas overflow kit, stainless front brake lines, driver's side front fender beading, and work on the interior a bit. some carpet is sagging but nothing is too bad. also have to re-install my dash trim tomorrow once i get some clips.

future plans are to source some rear cargo panels to match the ones in the cabin, get matching TMI carpet for the front and back trunks and re-condition the back of the back seat.... uh... back.

hahahaha yeah my car didn't catch on fire.

and yes i've been going back and forth with selling it... trying to get a notchback straight across. so it was more up there as a feeler to see if anyone was interested, and if they were, did they have a notch.
