| Years ago my family owned a '411 Stationwagen'. I recently aquired a '71 Squareback. What is the difference, if any?? |

squareback is a type 3
type 4s were called saloons and estates
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volkswagen_Type_4
Quote: The Type 4 was marketed as the Volkswagen 411, produced from 1968 to 1972, and, modestly improved, as the 412 from 1972 till 1974. Both ranges included a fastback saloon and an estate version. |

The body styles are quite similar between T3 and T4 VW's. The T3 terminology was often applied to the T4: Squareback, Fastback, etc. The T3's and T4's are almost totally different animals though. No body parts interchange and only a few very minor engine and suspension parts do. A T4 is the hardest aircooled VW of its era to restore and keep going, but can be an absolute pleasure when everything is right. |

Well said! These are very nice cars to drive and own. Very few parts come across from type 3. But some are worth having. The steering column and steering wheel and ignition switch and blinker lever assembly are definately same as late type 3. So are door handles. Ray |

| Thank you guys for the replys. After looking at the pictures and going into the Squareback forum, Im sure the car was the 4 headlight car. Mine now, has the 2 headlights. I also think I was mistaken in that I now think the other car was a 412. Not real sure now. Awesome spark-job...glad it didnt catch fire!! |

Just for my own intrest I made a quick look in a suppliers catalogue, what parts they list to be common for T3 and T4 cars in their (limited) stock. Dont know if it is 100% correct and some parts do not fit every year model etc.
Still it is a wery limited number of parts that interchange but there are a few surprises to me...

Hi Ray,
When you say steering column, are you referring to the actual tube that bolts onto the car which the indicator shroud etc bolt onto? I have used a column tube from a '72 Type 3 in my earlier '68 fasty, that part was an absolute cow to find, but if Type 4's used the same column tube then it woudl make my life so much easier for future conversions.... |

the tubes are for the car Not the colomn
and you can Really put any one you want in the car and just modify the wires
but up to 71 the wipers (?and something else?)
was on the dash
and 72-74 T3s and T4s(?)
have a different column where they have 2 levers
1 for headlights/blinkers
1 for wipers i believe
72-74 TYPE 3
72-74 TYPE 4
71' is ONE YEAR ONLY for the Actual Ignition Switch AND the Steering wheel/horn ring
The Brass Ribbon Keep Constant Contact With Wheel
my 71 T3 has a normal T3 2 spoke steering wheel With Ribbon
(love the date is 1981?)
strangely my 71 411 has a 3 prong steering wheel that i havent seen before..didnt Have turn switch when i got it
(and Still don know how to put the wheel together)
