| I'd like to get more power out of mine but I also like the idea of driving a piece of history. Granted, I feel uncomfortable on the interstate at rush hour with a stock set up. Slow lane for me all the way. Sometimes on a hill I feel I should put flashers on. |

Hey Volks,
I don't know about affordable, but if you're looking for around 100hp and don't want to break the bank, try a 1776 with some refinements, (lightened flywheel, bigger heads/valves, non-stock carb & exhaust, & such. This coupled with a freeway flier tranny setup will let you keep up with today's traffic; however, this is only part of the equation. You should really consider "beefing up" your suspension & braking if you're going for more performance, if not for handling then for safety reasons.
The 1776 is a good choice over the stock 1600 dp for overall good performance, and won't give you more heat-related problems with larger displacement vw engines. You're only pushing around a 1600 lb car, and while 100hp may not seem like much, it can really pull you back in your seat. Good luck with it. |
