Hello Folks,
my friends and I are trying to figure out what is the right type of ignition switch for a 56 Oval? I have been told that up until 1955, the Ovals used a 4-screw terminal type of switch. Then after 1955 went to the 3-screw terminal ignition switch. But I just met a gentleman who has a 57 oval, and says he has an original switch that came with the care, it is a 4-screw terminal switch? So, any help would be great! I guess my question is, did VW use both a 4 and a 3 screw terminal ignition switch for say the 56-57 ovals, or should it be one way or the other? Look forward to the help, please email me as well. Thanks again!

Oval ignition switches have 4 terminals.

There is a terminal marked - 50
there are 2 terminals marked- 30
There is a terminal marked -15/54

This is for a ingition switch for 54-57. Earlier than 54 had push button start.

As far as I know, the early ovals (up to 1955) used a three screw tab ignition switch and after that date they switched to the four tab.
I have been asking a similar question as I found a three screw tab switch and I don't know if it will work for my march 53zwitter with starter button.
Ignition switches are hard to figure out for the early cars.

Trayle has it correct.

Zwitters and ovals to the end of 53 used a smaller switch than later cars. Those used a G type key blank.

Then on Jan 1 54, the later oval switch was introduced. All 54 through 57 ignition switches have 4 terminals and take the SG key blank.

In 58, the mounting tab changed to work with the new dash. That switch has 3 terminals, used a SG key blank, and was used for only 2 years.

Nothing happened to the ignition switch in 55, except perhaps the shape of the head of the key.
