what is it

On my 79 Super it's a thin pipe that runs from the left side of the muffler, through a sealed filter compartment built into the pipe, up into the engine compartment and up to the air intake box on top of the engine. Actually, it's supposed to, but the previous owner cut it off between the engine compartment and the muffler and plugged the hole at the muffler. The pipe is supposed to recirculate exhaust gases back into the engine to reduce exhaust emissions. When it comes time to replace the muffler I'll be putting it back on (I found a replacement on the internet). Without it the car seems to run OK but I wonder if it would run better with the pipe back on. VW engineers I'm sure tuned the engine to run at its best with all the emissions control equipment installed.

E.G.R.= exaust gas reserculation.

The "EGR pipe" would be the way that the gas(taken from the exaust) is taken from you exaust system and brought back to the carborator/fuelinjection. This is all part of the emisions system.

Just a thought on EGR etc. I have a '78 efi beetle and re-installed the total EGR system.
I've found that there seems to be some btu value in the recirculated emissions and extra heat for better winter operability. So there you have it, increased gas mileage and smoother winter running.

One Man's Opinion,

I wanted to do that too but some previous owner cut off the EGR pipe and welded the opening in the muffler shut, so I'm waiting for this muffler to rust out then I'll get another one and reinstall the EGR pipe.
