Hello all. Its difficult to find just where to post my project. I guess this place is as close as it gets
Its not a buggy, or a Baja, many people have talked about a true 4x4 Bus, and a couple of people through-out the years have done it. It has been my dream for quite some time, so I started. the finished project will end up someting like this:
'68 Bay Window
CJ7 frame
300 hp LT1 connected to an auto tranny
37" Goodyears

Below is a copy to my Blog with pics. What do you think???

Where in cali are you and what are your plans for the old bus parts?

Madkel Tue Nov 02, 2010 1:23 pm

Hi Stever,

Great idea! Looks like it will be a great set up when you get it finished.

What part of Californai are you in? Nor Cal or So Cal?

I have also been thinking on building an offroad bus, but keeping the VW powertrain. With 4 kids at home I needs the room as the Thing is just not big enough to take everyone on the desert rides in So Cal.

ROCK ON!

off road bus is my ultimate dream 8-[

Thanks guys.
I live in the central coast (just north of San Luis Obispo). I wanted more room too, even though I dont have a family, nver have enough room for all the friends when we want to go out and play. Our just make is a trip for 2 and be able to go camping.
As far as the old bus parts, i would like to sell them....CHEAP. So far I have the front and read ends out (totally complete assemblies...drum to drum). There was no motor or trans to get rid of. If anyone know anyone that needs Jeep parts, I am getting rid of those too.

You know you are going to greatly diminish the value of the CJ7 don't you? Those things are very sought after and hard to find.

CJs are all over. Besides.... 1=It satisfies the wheelbase requirements....2=it is the proper width....3=I already had it. The end result is, there is always someone that doesnt like the fact that I cut up a bus, or the jeep. But unfortunately sacrafices had to be made to make the one vehicle that i want.

I think its pretty lame... that you haven't posted all the pics on this web site.

... let me know if you need an extra sawzall on the CJ... or the bus for that matter... :D

stever70 Tue Nov 02, 2010 4:56 pm

I have pics on my blog site, you are welcome to go check them out. The site is at the beginning of this post.

Sawzall....naaaa....PLAZMA CUTTER

I would recomend ditching the stock Jeep axles for full size Dana 60's. With a top heavy Bus to start with, and the lift needed for the 37's you will want to go wide as you go high.

stever70 Tue Nov 02, 2010 5:56 pm

I would LOVE Dana 60s...Got a pair you wanna give me???

baja72 Tue Nov 02, 2010 6:11 pm

Love to help you out, but the only D60's that I have are under my '84 Dodge W-350 crew cab. They get used almost every day hauling fire wood out of the woods at our farm.

You have to post pics here so we can check out this beast as it comes along.

CJ5's are all over but not CJ7's. Anyway, You're right it does satisfy your requirements. I would have gladly given you a few thousand for your CJ7 though.

Don't worry about the negative posts....you have a cool project.
I'd also like to see more pics.

sloboatnova Wed Nov 03, 2010 1:38 pm

If you really want to see some negative posts, try mounting the VW beams and rear end to the CJ7 tub.

That would be almost as cool.
