(on a 67 bug). my top beam is cut and turned, on the bottom, i want to pull the leaves. do i pull the fat ones or the skinny ones. if its the skinny ones, does it matter if i pull the ones on top or bottom of the fat ones. do i pull 2 or 3.(i am only pullin the ones out of th bottom beam, since the tops already cut and turned). any help would be appreciated.

wow, I haven't ever seen a beam cut and turned on the top and pulled on the bottom. And I thought I had seen everything. How low is the top one turned, Like if the bottom one was also turned, how low would the car be?

***first off, you should use an adj beam, or spindles***this is not the safest thing to do***If I thought that I could convince you not to do it I would, but since you are going to do it anyway, this is the old school method***

on a balljoint bug you can remove all of the little ones, they don't hold the allen bolt in.

I have seen four littles taken out of each tube, to keep the same diamond shaped pattern, and then the arms put in at a different angle, and a new divot drilled to hold the bars. this slammed a 66 about 6 inches, and it rode like crap of course.

taking out all of the little ones dosent lower it that much, dosen't ride too bad either. you can cut the ends of the removed bars and weld them to the the bigger bars to fit the arm better, but if you had a welder then I assume you would do this all the right way to begin with.

this is all for a 66 and later balljoint bug only, there are other methods for this and a link pin car as well.

seriosly, way old skool, way ghetto, but whatever. If you need more help ask

IS THER ANYWAY TO CONVINCE YOU TO NOT PULL TORSIONS???, WHY NOT JUST WELD IN ADJUSTERS........

Air-Cooled Head Tue Nov 12, 2002 10:16 am

Slmd69, Hope you live on the salt flats! Your car won't be able to get over most speed bumps, or up any driveways. And don't forget to get a mouth-piece for driving, so the bone-jarring ride doesn't make you bite your tongue off.
The "cut & turn/pull leaves" method is so sixties! This is gonna break your 8 track player!

Erik G Tue Nov 12, 2002 1:27 pm

I don't know if thats all really true all of the time. There was a kid here in town that pulled all the little ones on his fully restored 64, and because all of the front end pieces were brand new, it rode better than many adj beam cars I've been in.

I say dont pull leafs. Not only are there ride issues but its dangerous. Ya sure we all did it back in the day. But now there are so many other options, and ways to do it safely. Look into other options slmd69bug, I think you find that doing it the right way is alot more inexpensive then you think. Just my .02.

i know its dangerous, but i which way would it be bad. has any one hadan encounter with something goin wrong ona pulled leave front beam.

I can attest to the shittiness of the ride of Eric G's car. It was like driving a trampoline!! Made my ass hurt just goin down the street! Please rethink the torsion leave pulling method...

Air-Cooled Head Wed Nov 13, 2002 9:18 am

Which way bad? Less leaves=less spring=more stress on related componets=increased wear=more maint=more $$$ out of pocket!

Adam Vegas JHC Wed Nov 13, 2002 2:04 pm

Just weld in the adjusters! My friend pulled leaves out and cut and turned his shit and it was like a rock rollin down the street. Do it once, the right way, go to cip1.com and order a drum to drum beam, or even just an adjustable middle section. Dont take the leaves out. Do it the right way!

Ever had your spindle arm come out cause there was not enough leaves left for the allen screw to work. kinda scarry taking a turn and your shiat falls apart.

I had a lwoered 70 bus....pretty damn clean, bought it from the Pomona swap meet for 1,400 from some cat that needed cash. Anyway, I was working about 20 mins away...if you took the street. I used to take the frwy in the AM because I did not want to be late...it was quicker. So I take the frwy in the AM. After work, I am cruising home...and I mean cruising...like 25 or 30 the whole way. I stop at this light, just finished making a right turn and the whole right front end came apart. My right front tire was 90 degrees with the hub cap facing the sky. The left front was ok, but the whole damn thing fell apart. The wheel gpt caught under the bus so it stopped the bus from dragging on the street. What a ride. I am so thankful that it did not happen on the frwy. Lower it the right way. Don't end up a statistic. Nobody wants to see you on the news tonight with a clean VW that's lowered, minus a driver.

Yes it is 2002! ....

I can see the appropriate Star Trek episode....

Bones sez " dammit Jim I'm a Vw mechanic not a butcher... pulling leaves is like pulling teeth without novicane..."

Spock sez " with today's modern engineering marvels pulling torsion leaves is completely illogical..."

Capt. JT Kirk sez " DAMMIT Scotty we need to go lower, do somthing... that's an order!"

Scotty sez "aye Capt... but if we pull the leaves we could all die a horrible death from internal bleeding from the ride impact and may not have any teeth for Doctor Mcoy to pull..."

Checkov sez " the only leaves I'll be pulling are the ones out of my stash bag hidden in cargo bay seven"

Uhuruh sez " Capt. I've hailed experts on all frequencies... the majority of the responses from outpost SAMBA say not to do it... order the right parts and put in for repair...."

Spock repeats.." live long and prosper, lower wrong and you too will be doomed"

Kirk sez "well done crew... ensign set a course for outpost SAMBA..."

Dude, to carry on with keifer's scenario, if you pull the leaves, you might as well start calling yourself "fifth guy" you know, when kirk, spock, checkov and mccoy beam down to the planet with a fifth guy, who is the one who always gets killed?

john@aircooled.net Fri Nov 15, 2002 2:05 pm

the "fifth guy" is called a Red-Shirt, they always died.

Adam Vegas JHC Sat Nov 16, 2002 6:13 am

keifernet Sat Nov 16, 2002 9:44 am

I was having a bad day, the rants was boring... (too much JHC BS! LOL!) and so I vented through comdedic releif!
Glad you got the adjusters in there 69 slammed.... you asking the questions and sacrificing yourself to the lions may also have helped save some other redshirt newbie from the fate of lowering no no's......
