I have a 66 vert with solid black slotted wheels.

I have seen original 66 bugs with two tone original slotted wheels that are black in the center and white on the outside rim.

I am going to have them sandblasted. I went to a local body shop to see if they would do the two tone paint for me. The guy refused saying that he has tried in the past without success.

He said I should try find a Stensil? Anybody got a good idea or experienced tip? I was thinking of just jamming poster board in the wheel crease since taping is tough.

I think the two tones really look nice (and correct) with the 3/4in. whitewalls

Thanks in advance.

Mark

all 66's should be a twotone black and white as you described, I have seen a metal ring that expands from 13 to 16 inches or so just for painting rims. I think it was at harbor freight, check JC whitney too.

If you like the early big dome hubcaps, you can fir them if you bend the hubcap to fit in those tabs. this also works for the porsche nipple caps

IMO the guy you talked to is LAME... if you can't even tape a rim (or have an employee who can) for a two-tone paint job you should not be in the paint and body business!

It's not that hard... make sure the sandbllast residue is scrapped out of the crack... and they are properly cleaned and primered.... then spray the inside with the black( actually I would spray the whold amn rim black first ) and let it dry for a couple days to be safe on re taping.... then carefully, patiently tape off the center.... and spray the outside with the white.... Orig is really an off white kinda creamy color I think.... with no tire and or valve stem it should be a breeze... I've even rattle canned a few sets that came out pretty nice....good luck....

I agree that the body shop is lame if they won't do it, but you can most likly do just as good a job for a lot less money if you take your time. I would say don't jam paperboard in there, you could make a real mess and it's going to be tough to paint. I would also not recommend painting the whole wheel black, then painting over it in white for a couple reasons. First, black is hard to cover, if you are going to do that, you would be better off to paint the white first, then paint the black over the white. Second, you'll have to prep the paint that is already on. I just painted my wheels and I taped off the outside, sprayed the inside, let it dry overnight, taped off the inside and sprayed the outside. It turned out really good, a little extra time, but they look perfect, just take your time and they will look perfect.

Could someone freshen up my history?
I thought the 66 vert came with solid black wheels since it came from the factory with beauty rings. I agree with you Mark that the two tone looks better and I would do the same, I was just sifting through my head and thought I remembered this....

Yes....
so i have learned. all black is correct for the convertible, with (ugly) beauty rings. I think I will do two tone B/W wheels just the same. Thanks for eveyone's encouragement.

I never understood why VW used the beauty rings they did. didn't the Karmann use a georgeous beauty ring that just covered the rim of the wheel where the tire and rim met? then you could show off the wheel and make it two tone and such and STILL have some chrome trim, I like that much better. I like the two tone wheels
