the rear brake drum on my 67 bug is pushed in beyond the beyond rearaxle splines. This happened after i put on new seals and tightend the rear axle nut. did i go to far? I don't think this is right. I think that the drum should extend beyond the axle spline so it can fit tight and hold the bearing and seals so they don't leak. any ideas as to what i need to do or where does the brake drum sit on the axle? thanks talipp.

You forgot to refit the spacer in the oil seal housing.

no i did put the spacer in the oil seal housing. i also noticed that when i originally put it together that i had about one quarter of an inch play between the drum and the axlenut. i then inserted two washers between the nut and the drum to get a tight fit. when i went to check i then observed that the axle spline was protuding beyond the drum? anyway does the drum sit at the edge of the spline or beyond. also i am going to pull the drum as soon as i can get a puller, it is really on there. and then try again. thanks talipp.

can anyone tell me how to determine the difference between and 67 and 68 tranny? i think the axle arms to a 68 are a bit longer and the splines also are longer to accomadate the larger brake drum. but i would like to know the dimensions so i can check if what i got was a 67 as told and not a 68. thanks talipp
