| I'm looking at a 68 Beetle with a 1776 and Weber 40 carb. The engine runs wonderfully smooth, as it has only 15k miles on it, but here's the problem: When given too much gas, the engine sputters and sometimes stalls. The seller claims this is just because the 40 carb is giving the engine too much gas, and that it should be swapped for a 36mm, but I wonder what else could be wrong. Has anyone ever had this problem? Does this just need a simple carb adjustment? What else could be wrong? Thanks for the info. |

One thing I need to clarify- The engine runs fine at every rpm, but when pushed hard or when accelerating very quickly, it sputters.
Thanks. |

| large single carbs require a lot of tuning in order to run right which is why most time you see them they run like crap and with those long intakes they will always have lousy throttle response. i would recomend pulling that whole set up off and going with dual carbs, you will be much happier. maybe dual dellorto 36 drla's, dual dellorto 40 drla's, dual webber 40 idf's, or dual 40 kadrons. and back to your original question is is very possible and likely that the carb is you problem. |
