the other day we were discussing the first lowered type 3

Is it official, do we know what was the first lowered type 2? If it's not known, it's ok to post 80's pics with a known date, in order to try to narrow down the first lowered bus

I'd bet some of the old timer stock nazi types will have a pretty good memory of this

pics, if you have them, would be great

thread that inspired this one --> http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=438729&highlight=lowered

It is not a new concept.
I have a 1958 or 1959 Foreign Car Guide magazine with questions from a reader about lowering his bus.
If necessary, I can probably dig it out and post a scan of the text.

i think the brookes steven barndoor camper is it.

hmm, interesting. wonder what the reason was back then? to fit in a garage? or just to be cool?

The first lowered bus would be the porsche 356 teams "chase bus"
The panel with leaves modded and bug straight axle with 356 motor in it. Even had 356 16" wheels on it.
It was done when the bus was like 2 years old if i remember right.
Im sure someone knows all about it and will post all its glory here soon.
Thats my fav low bus ever, and if i ever lower a bus it will be identical to that bus stance, tires and all. :D

Any proof of this? I've heard equally well it's just an urban legend (or 'bus legend' as the case may be).

yeah, I thought the porsche bus was debunked too

gibbs, I've seen that one before, when was that lowered?

npbusguy, if you get a chance, that would cool. I would have never guessed that it would have been in a magazine that early

Theres the proof!!!!!!!!!!!!

http://www.cal-look.com/blogs/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/rui-bus-1.jpg I was huntin' for it!

Borrowed a lil quote from the page...

1952 VW Barndoor Panel formerly owned by Paul Rui of Oslo, Norway. It was supposedly used as a support vehicle by the Otto Glockler racing team back in the 1950s, and is equipped with a Porsche 912 engine, 356 A brakes, 356 wheels with Dunlop racing tires, “Sebring”-type 4 cam exhaust, and a VW gearbox (with no reduction boxes). The interior is equipped with Porsche posters from the 1950s.

Cool.

dawerks Fri Nov 19, 2010 4:00 pm

I saw it on the internet.

So it must be true!

mightymouse Fri Nov 19, 2010 4:05 pm

From what i remember, there is an original one. Then one guy made a copy of it. I think the 2 are getting confused. They are easy to tell apart, and there are pics of both side by side if i remember right.
Meh, i could be wrong. EIther way, that bus is clean and NOT overlowered.

Erik G Fri Nov 19, 2010 4:11 pm

used in the 50's as a race prep vehicle could be proven

but it wouldn't have has a 912 motor in it until the late 60's, certainly not in the 50's. We know the gearbox wouldn't be from then, cause no way anyone would have gone straight axle with a 25hp motor. well, I wouldn't think so anyways. And then what did they do in the front? It all sounds like a good theme bus, in order to sell your bus for top dollar, sure, and the bus is bad ass, but I don't think it ads up

ferry Fri Nov 19, 2010 4:11 pm

its possible that this bus has bin used for porsche purposes ..but the story doesnt tell that this bus was lowered back in the fifties

Anyone remember this bus? It was in an old Hot Vw's and it was called the Sayonara Bus or Sano '54 ragtop, something like that. This photo was taken the day before it left to Japan.

This scan is from an overhead projector transparency that was scanned from the original article years ago, for a mural that never happened:
