I was stopping at stop signs and my car would idle up. I found that while driving the Operation lever- fast idle cam, would move all the way up on the steps. This is the part that the idle screw rests on. Is there a way to adjust this so that it doesnt just move all the way up once u hit the gas. Would it be ok to take off the Operation lever that drives the fast idle cam down.??

Sounds like you need to adjust the choke, which the fast idle (stepped) cam works with to keep the car idling when cold.

With the engine cold, remove the air cleaner and pull gently on the throttle arm to set the choke ON.

It should JUST fully close on a cold morning - not snap hard shut.

Loosen (don't remove) the three screws in the retaining ring on the right side of the carby to rotate the choke canister until the choke just closes (you'll have to move the throttle arm to set the fast idle cam again after you've moved the choke canister).

Then drive the car and see how it works - the choke should back off and stand completely upright when the engine is hot, and the screw should then be sitting on the very bottom of the fast idle cam. You might need to fine tune it one way or the other to get it just right. Note that there are marks on the retaining ring and canister body to help you see how far you are turning the canister.

If the nut holding the stepped cam to the choke shaft gets loose the stepped cam can flop about and move when it shouldn't - so check that too - the stepped cam should be "loose" on the shaft but not rattling around.
