My 64 bug still has its original neg strap for its battery. I have cleaned the connections, but the wire mesh has the typical corossion (sp?) green tint. What wire gauge do I need to replace this cable, or do I need the VW wire mesh one? Has a slow turnover sometimes, only reason why I'm thinking of switching the cable before I do more drastic measures to diagnose potential problem.
Thanks for your insight.
I appreciate it.

Any decent battery cable will do for that job, but you can get the right battery strap from www.aircooled.net or other VW shops.

There is also a strap from the tranny nose to a mounting bolt, so the tranny/engine is properly earthed too. Dirty connections here can cause slow cranking. Also clean the heavy wire to the starter. The 6v system in the VW works fine so long as the connectors are all clean and bright. 35 years of road grim and rain can take their toll on any electrical stuff.

One thing you could do to try and save the original braided cable is to soak it in a bucket/pail whatever with some baking soda solution and 1/4 part vinegar and 3/4 water.... neato Mr. science guy experiment to get the kiddo's involved in too. :)
Then lube it down when it dries out....
