Help,
I have just bought a 1641 turnkey and the alt it came with is diffrent from my ole trusty bosch one,it now has a motorola and ,I was wondering if the motorola has an internal regulator and if it is the same ampheres as the bosch.Some one please ,my regulator was taken out because of the bosch and i just need to know if everything is the same or what,any tech info on this alternator will help,
also a description of the alt,is it has a little blck box on top,ive heard that old one had white boxes or something i dont know

The Motorola was a much better alternator than the Bosch.
It will have only two connections...one for the B+ 10/12 gauge wire and another for the little blue wire that goes to your charging light in the spedometer.
If the morotola ever goes out, have it rebuilt, it's a much better unit than the Bosch! |

Actually, the 73-later type 1 models that came with alternators could have either the Bosch or the Motorola "three prong" plug in style requiring the V-reg under the rear seat.
The " two- connection" style you mention was not a factory item... The Motorola replacement/aftermarket alt's that came on the scene in the 80's had a funky
" white box " style V -reg on top of the alternator and it sounds like this is the style that "kadolph" is talking about. Either it has a replacement regulator on it or someone just painted the white one black?
Anyway... those style V-regs are hard to come by... at least in my area, so the Motorola has fallen out of favor for the Bosch unit...
Most aftermarket replacement alternators sold in the last 15 years were the Bosch AL -82( X for rebuilt N for new) with the built in regulator which requires removing the V-reg from under the rear seat and hooking the wiring together)
( so it is also only a 2 wire hookup, B+ big red and little blue to the charging light)
KADOLPH, Hook it up the same and if it charges your cool... it works the same way just has the funky "external regulator" on top of the alt itself...
As far as one being better than the other??? I have had all types and they all do the same thing work til they quit! |
