Does the autostick or semi auto whatever you want to call it, shift similar to the standard? or someone told me it is more like a 3 speed that you can leave in gear and just drive and it will down shift if needed on its own? this seems to be an animal all its own.

yes it is three speeds, you do need to shift at stop signs and stuff. they work good when everything is just perfect, but they are MORE than a pain in the a$$ when they don't work. I bet they were cool from the factory, but nowadays I wouldnt even think about it.

An autostick is not an automatic! It uses 2nd, 3rd and 4th from the manual transmission. The ONLY thing the autostick did, was eliminate the clutch pedal.

The sutostick used a torque convertor to make up for the lack of 1st gear and smooth out the manual shifting.

It also had a "manual" clutch, which was activated by a button switch at the base of the shifter.

To drive an autostick, you placed the shifter in the 1 position, the manual clutch engaged and the engine was then straining against the torque convertor.

When you shifted, you "manually" disengaged the the manual clutch by moving the shifter. You then moved the shifter to the next gear and let go of the shifter. Then the torque convertor took up the slack and smoothed out the shift.
