I bought a new aftermarket fender for my 66 type1
and it does not have the holes on the top of the fender
for the turn signals??? Did I get the wrong fender or
do I have to drill these out???

It may not be the "wrong" fender, just not a "correct" fender. Aftermarket fenders are a crap-shoot at best. You should be able to drill the holes since they'll be covered by the assembly itself.
Better test fit it to the car first. It could be the "wrong" fender.

If you purchased a new aftermarket fender, they never have the opening for the oem turn signal assembly. As for "correctness", it's a seasy as trial fitting your headlight bucket(s). VW only made 2-styles of headlights. Sloping (-66) and Upright (67-on)

Check the location of the small horn grills. Different after market companies have them higher or lower than original German ones. They really look awfull if they are too far off. I know. Also be sure as previous responders have mentioned to test fit the fender BEFORE you paint it. The mounting holes may not be a perfect fit either and may need some adjustment from a round file. BTW I have had them both ways with and without the mounting holes for the turn signals. It is not a big deal to drill the holes. Measure carefully on your good fender. A few months back one of the magazines H VWs or Trends did a side by side comparison. I suspect that over the years the die stamps became off and instead of making them right they just keep on pressing. Most retailers suggest that
you buy repros in pairs for this reason. I kind of rank repro parts by country of origin so I always ask when ordering. Denmark metal best, Italy next, Mexico for some parts and Brazil last. This has been my expereince for a number of years.

Thanks everyone for the replys!!! All the mounting
holes line up but 1 that I will make a bit bigger
with a file. The Headlight buckets fit fine so I
guess I have the "correct" fender. The orginal one
is not that bad so I might just do some work on it
first before drilling the new one.

Thanks again!!

i believe that fender is considered to be a cal fender if im correct they shave off the turn signal some people sell the aftermarket fenders with the holes not cut out for that reason
