Is the right push bar the same as the left push bar ? According to me, the two bars should be different, so that the upper return spring does not touch the convex part of the bar. Am I right ?

Thanks for your help, Phil.

set the bars up so the spring sits inside the dish in the bar. I ran into issues with this, and even though it looked wrong to me the way i hooked it up, it wound up being right and has been working flawlessly for almost 2000 miles.

I am not sure to understand the trick.
Right now, the left and right push bars of my '72 bug are identical, with the upper springs on top of them. On the left hand side, the spring is inside the dish (concave side) while on the right hand side, the spring is outside the dish (convex side).

I can't figure out how the spring can be below the bar, but maybe my understanding is wrong.

Right now, my parking brake works fine on the left wheel, but not on the right wheel. I have just installed some brand new parking brake cables and the rear brakes have been correctly adjusted.

Even when I pull the parking cable directly from the drum, the push bar does not move.

So, I see three different options:
- I don't have the correct push bar on my right drum.
- The push bar is worn.
- a combination of the two above options

It's kinda hard to explain, but i do believe they are both the same. At the ends of the bar are cut out notches. MAke sure the narrower notch lines up with the front shoe and the wider, stepped notch lines up with the rear shoe/E-brake actuator and that the springs on both sides sit inside the dish. It's kinda weird to visualize until you get it right then it's "How didn't I see that!"

I just want to confirm this install.

First of all, the same piece is sold for both the left and right side. There is no distinction between a left and right push bar.

And clearly the important thing is that the stepped notch goes to the back brake shoe. Right?

And what you end up with is this: On the left side the return spring sits in the "bowl" on the bar.

And on the right side the return spring ends up sitting on top of the "bump" on the bar.

What confuses is me is that on the left side the spring fits nicely in the "bowl". But on the right side it sits on top of the "bump" and well...it just doesn't seem right....although it is correct. Right?

According to CIP1, it fits both left & right.

I know it seems weird but yes, you have it correct.

Thats correct. There is only one bar. It looks wrong, but it works right.
