It appears radio questions equal a dead
thread. I'll try anyway in hopes of catching that sick VW dude who knows way more about VWs than anyone really should. I got a Sapphire xiv am/fm and the FM doesn't work.
Anyone had this and fixed it? Also is it
completely lame to pull a working stock
radio and put in a new CD unit? It just doesn't look right to me. Seeing a stock
VW with a radio slot that looks like it has a laser light show coming out of it gives me the creeps. Maybe I'm old fashioned but I'd rather have a half working stock radio
than than a new CD player. |

| I have my AM/FM Stock Ghia radio in the shop under repair. I stopped by and it is working but not quite repaired all the way. Sure it would be easier to just throw in a new radio but it just aint the same chrome buttons and face plate. |

Well folks, I believe you can have the best of both worlds. I have a Kenwood KRC-1007 installed in my 67 convertible, it it not only works great, it looks oem too.
If you're not familiar with the KRC-1007, it's a dbl-shaft unit (not DIN-size) so it fits into the dash with no mods. Second, it not only has am/fm tape feature, but it also controls a Kenwood 10-disc CD changer which can be hidden in numerous places.
I don't know if the unit is readily available through authorized Kenwood dealers, but Classic Car Sounds has them in stock. They can even modify the radio bezel to include a chrome fascia for the earlier car owners (mine is Black). Unfortunetly, the Kenwood unit will NOT fit the opening of Pre -57 cars, but it will fit the opening of all years Type 2 models. |

I've got my working Sapphire X Am radio in my '67, but don't ever use it. I've got a CD player sitting in the parcel tray that I use all the time. I like the look of the original radion in the dash, but I couldn't live without a CD player or an FM radio.

| Also, try the hidden stereo products. I've seen them in show cars and you can't tell they are there. I believe they're advertised in all the popular magazines. |

Man,
I just bought an old radio off of ebay from some guy in Germany. I put it in and it works great. It's an old Blapunkt (excuse the spelling had a few beers). I think it's a 1964-1966 model with AM/FM. I enjoy having an old radio in the dash. It adds to the whole experience. You know cruise'n to the store to get ice-cream with the hum of an old radio. That's what it's all about... |

| I've got an old radio, but some guy took out my speakers before I bought it. So I hooked up some of my dads dentist office speakers under my seats, and it sounds great. |

| You know I'm not sure I want to fix the FM anymore.I found this sick Am station that plays nothing but 60s'/70s' stuff, I've been driven around in my 71 ghia in a complete time warp. The worlds a little slower and innocent again, hell I might find some women who are into free love next...wish me luck |
