How hot does a 1500cc enigine get?
And could you use a 30 pict 2 carb on a 1600 cc motor thanks

I was wondering because i am going to clean up my manifoilds and engine and wanted to paint it. I was looking at some por 15 paints and some other coatings.

The case won't get any hotter than the oil - up to 140c max.

The heads and cylinders get a lot hotter than that at times.

BUT - there is little advantage with painting an engine. It's hard to get any paint to stick to magnesium/aluminium alloy which has been soaked in oil and road grime for 30 years, and the paint will almost certainly peel off in patches and look worse than the original case metal.

The inlet manifold gets only warm in the middle but quite hot at the outer ends - stove-pipe paint might work.

And re the 30PICT/2 with 1600cc - yes - it works very well.

VW used this combination in the 68-70 type2s (bus/kombi); and with the 30PICT/3 in the 1970 bugs sold in the USA (same sized carby, just had extra adjustements over the 30PICT/2).

I currently have a 30PICT/2 on my 1600dp, but before that, the same carby was used on a 1600sp (larger cylinders used in the original 1500 case). This particular carby has been pushing my bugs around for about 280,000 miles now without any major rebuild.

The 1600sp engine with any of the 30/31 series carbs is considered by many to be one of the best VW engine combinations - it has a few less hp than the 1600dp with 34PICT/3, but is very torquey, economical and reliable.

For use on a 1600 with a vacuum distributor, the 30PICT/2 works well with a 55 idle jet, 125 main jet and 125 or 130 air correction jet.

For a 1600 with 009 distributor, the 30PICT/2 works well with 55 idle, 127.5 (just maybe 130) main jet, and 115-120 air correction jet. These changes run the engine a little richer which suits the 009 better.
