Has anyone put a 12V solenoid on a 6V starter? I have been reading old threads on here and come to the conclusion this is what I need to do to fix my problem. I converted to 12V early last year and now the starter is beginning to "zing" a couple times before it finally kicks in on the engine. I am guessing the solenoid is on its way out. Anyone, please tell me if this is possible, if you have done it, and where to get such a part....Thanks!

Hiya Craig, I ran 12V solenoid on 6V starters for years. Just go to Kragen or some auto store like that and get a vw 12V solenoid. Good luck, Ol' John

Will the 12V fit onto the starter in the same manner the original 6V solenoid did?

Yes it works I do it to all my cars. Makes an old 6volt starter work like a high torque starter.

Well, I attempted this over the weekend and it did not work. I took a Bosch 12V starter, pulled the solenoid off and placed it on my Bosch 6V starter. All I got after that was clicking. Any suggestions?

Either that solenoid was bad or you have other issues in the wiring, like ground cables or something. Does it work if you jump across the terminals with a screwdriver?

Son of a !)(!!)()@?!! I justed typed a long message and the browser crashed.
Anyway, I tested the 12V starter before I began. It worked. But since I placed it on the 6V and removed it, it now does not work. So I guess I do have a bad one. Can you still get Bosch 12V solenoid new somewhere? The auto parts stores here have other manufacturers... |
