Alright, this is a really "redneck" way to find a short. Everyone will laugh, but it works 75% of the time.
If you live in the city or don't have a garage, go out in the country or somewhere DARK. (This is getting to the redneck part). Or turn out the light in the garage. Now put in a good fuse and connect the battery/turn on the ignition switch, and (here it comes) watch for the flash. Whenever the power is supplied to the shorted wire, it will arc across to ground, thus causing a brief flash. Bring a handfull of extra fuses, because you will probably have to do this several times. A friend to help turn switches etc.
If you still don't see anything, shake the wiring harness around, pull it away from the body. If you pull it off the body, and the fuse doesn't blow, that part of the harness has the short. If it still blows, examine for wires burned together and look at other parts of the harness. Repeat untill short is located.
Otherwise, rip it all out and put in a new harness. Only $159 through Whitney. LOL |
