when i put my 67 beetle in reverse slow, the gear grinds bad, so i have to slam it into reverse. also, its really hard to put it into first gear. when it is in first on level ground and the clutch is all the way in, it slightly moves if my foot is not on the brake, but when i put it in neutral, it doesnt roll. how do i adjust the clutch? do I tighten or loosen the bolt on the clutch arm, or tighten it? do I have to pull the motor out? thanks

| you need to tighten your clutch! tighten the wing nut at the end of the cable'it's near the top of the trans on the drivers side you will need to hold the cable with vice grips to keep it from spining and turn the wing nut clockwise till you have obut a 1/2 inch to an inch of freeplay at the pedal before you feel any pressure good luck steve |

I'll break the procedure down a little more:
Jack the rear of the car up on level ground. Place something in front of the front wheels to keep it from rolling. Remove the dirver's side rear tire. Put jack stands under the car at the same point you insert the jack. Clamp needlenose vice grips on the clutch cable, on the FRONT side of the metal arm that holds the clutch cable after it leaves the bowden tube. (The adjustment wing-nut is on the rear side of this "arm".) You may have to spray some WD40 on the area of the wing nut if it hasn't been adjusted in a while. Turn the wing-nut clockwise, checking the clutch pedal inside the car until it tightens as sgmalt46 describes above. If it won't adjust like this, or this doesn't solve things, you have more than a clutch adjustment causing the problems... |
