Welp,
I finally widdled my engine in place,on the way in the rear tin on the engine got stuck in between the bell housing and the engine only on the top, its not far enough in to hit the flywheel , so my question is will this effect the tolerance between the input shaft of the tranny and the engine,I noticed that the input shaft on the tranny has a decent amount of slop to compensate this,im thinking this allows for a little misalignment i dont know the severity or if a problem will occur. The motor is all torqued in and ready to roll,i would really hate to pull it a little the way out to remove that stupid tiny tin. What you gurus think????? |

| The engine and trans-axel must mate squarely in order for things to function correctly. The starter bendix or nose bushing will likely be the first to fail. The "slop" you mention in the input shaft is worth investigation. Too much play may indicate excessive wear, which may cause leakage initially and "ground up" gears if not corrected. Check a VW Shop, Bently or Haynes manual for the exact tolerances and repair procedure. |

| I think you already know the answer, but just don't want to have to do it. I don't blame you , cause I've been there (not this particular problem) more times than I like to remember. The VW is one of the greatest mechanical designs of the 20th century, but not the most forgiving. I can promise you you'll wish you took the time to do it right, probably real quick. Instead of pulling the motor to realign it properly, you'll be pulling it to replace your transaxle...Treat her right and she'll treat you the same. |
