| If a heavier oil helps then its definately pressure related. The modulator can be adjusted with no disaasembly. Ray |

BTW, I use Castrol Import/Multi Vehicle ATF, and it seems to work quite well in my 150Kmi+ 412...

You guys sound pretty knowledgeble about thees 411/412 transmissions, so I have a Question:
I've decided to pitch the old broken automatic in my 74' wagon and replace it (with structural mods -yes) for a standard stick. I'm talking with a guy in California who will build me one with an exchange of an old type 1 core "DC" IRS that I have. He wants to make sure the trany he builds will match the gear ratios necessary to pull the type 4's weight (BTW, I'm going to use a 1600 motor). Does anyone know what a 412 standard gear ration would be?
I'd rather not buy a $500 bus trany, and if I get a type 1 tranny with the right gearing it only costs me $300...
Thanks, Karl |

Why go with a1600? Why would you down grade to a smaller engine
I mean out will pull it but....
Go with a1776 or such
And the only real difference is the final drive
I wouldn't put a smaller engine in it |

I think that you will find that it would be extremely difficult to use a T1 or T2 transmission in the T4. The shifter cone is going to interfere with the frame cross member. I am thinking of trying a Vanagon side shift transmission and use a cable shifter.
The gears in the original T4 transmissions were pretty long compared to a Bug or Bus transmission. You would certainly want shorter gears if you were using a 1600 engine. |
