finally got the bus home. 2/26/11. the build will start on page 4.
so i bought the bus today, 1/29/11. i will pick it up from the guy during spring break at the end of February. i just didnt wanna have to dig it out and put the front end on it the snow and cold weather.
i did look under the bus and dug through everything inside to find that there is less rust than i had thought before. a basic run down for metal will be:
-both rockers.
-cargo floor patching. not the whole floor like i had thought.
-rear corners.
-drivers side front floor.
im gonna order split and bay metal where needed. the only thing that shouldnt be a direct fit will be the rear corners because they are split corners modified to fit late bay tails.
it has split cargo doors but is missing the latch so im hoping a split one will work fine with it. and someone started to strip the heating system outta it so its all in the back of the bus. so i have to put that back together. the dash has some cracks but im just gonna leave it for now.
some things that puzzle me.
1. it was suppose to have RGB in it. it has a type II irs set up. from what i could see it looked factory. doesnt make sense though because it has a trans carriage like a split. they didnt use them in a bay window. so i believe someone may have converted it. it is still wide 5 though.
2. someone torched the shift linkage under the bus to get the front end out? idk what one to get yet. bay or split?
some plans are.
- 4 inch narrowed link pin front end. (bought the front end already)
- drop spindles
- run a type II IRS from an early bay.
- fit 7 inch widened steelies in the rear, hopefully.
- smoothie beetle rims. maybe.
- build westy interior for it. im gonna use full width hinges and just build the interior. itll be like a split window just without all the cupboard space cause i dont want to cover the windows up. just a basic bed, table, and jump seat.
more pics and info later after i actually get a chance to work on it. living away at school doesnt let me work on it back home.

vv ORIGINAL POST IS BELOW vv
how rare is a bay corner window bus? i cant seem to find any pics of one.
EDIT:
i went and looked at the bus today. it has a clean 1981 title.
it has a fair amount of rust issues. both rocker. outside of the cargo floor by the rockers. the rear corners. some in the front tire well at the start of the rocker.
its missing a front beam, tranny, and motor.
non-walkthrough. with only the rear seat. no middle seat. however it does look to have some sweet door panels that have been razor bladed to crap. :(
so i talked to Dean Bradley and got some very useful info from him. thanks again.
-link pin front beam like a pre 67 split.
-reduction boxes like a split
fig also has good info on page 4.
ON TO THE PICS!!!

These things must drive the split guys crazy. Definitely Brazilian buses.

it looks just like the last 2 pics posted. im not sure about the reduction boxes or really anything other than i know where one is just sitting there.
so i was wondering if it was rare and worth maybe saving? the guy said he thought it was a 78 or 79. |

no they are not rare. They are bastard hybrid rejects - all the crap laid around the factory floor went in to making them. The product of a deranged mind
They should be driven out of town by peasants with pitchforks and burning torches  |

weren't they usually made fairly poorly as well, in terms of the thickness of the metal used?
I remember hearing that while you could buy a baywindow bus late into the 90's, they were crap compared to the originals and would rust twice as fast. |

they would be no different to the metal in a split or a bay. They were just part bin builds - whatever was left over got used.
It's nasty looking, looks like something the japanese would make as a homage to vw buses. We should burn em all |

| I would be concerned about cooling if used at freeway speeds. |

| So what everyone is saying is that they are not the best to get. I actually like the way they though. I might get it anyways depending on how rusted it is. |

| Any other places to check? I know the sliding door and floor and the underneath and by the front beam. |

If those doors are sliding then you've got problems.
Pretty much anywhere for rust underneath, check around the rear torsion housing area (the 'rear beam' if you like) anything other than this can be fixed with enough grim determination.

The Fleetline was a South African Bus, not a Brazilian one. |

Why is this? Cause they have vents like a splitty but a larger engine? Do splittys have cooling issues? |

No, if all the tin is in place and the cooling system is healthy you can run a big engine in a split just fine, bays have the vents higher to avoid dust and debris and the scoops were to make it look space age
Any bus is worth saving if it isn't rotten beyond repair, Baysplits are fairly uncommon in North America so you get the added cool factor (sorta). The bodywork is crude and some of the technology ancient but that's what makes a bus fun isn't it? |

If's a a vote...then I vote cool!
I think the corner windows eliminate an awful blind spot and look pretty sweet while doing it |

Call me stupid, and if someone says this was built in built in South Africa I'll believe them, but what besides that is special about this bus? It looks like a plain old RHD Splitty. |

It was built in the mid 70's. Split Bus production ended in August 1967. |
