does anyone know when vw stoped making the oval window, and when did they start making the big giant window.

57 was the last oval
58-64 small square window
65- large square window

I have seen a 1957 square window bug but was unsure if the older guy was correct with the date. As far as I know, august of 57 was when VW changed to the square back window. (the end of an era!)

99.99%, ovals were made up to '57 and big windows starting from '58. But there were a few factory mutants out there. Check around pg90 on Jan'05 VWTrends *last month's), the guy with a VW collection of 80 cars (Hebs, KDFs, etc) has a late '57 w/a big window with a pict. I also hear that in Mexico (where they don't follow rules too well) has made ovals up to the late 50's (maybe up to '61?).

In the 50s, VW of Mexico was building cars from German parts, so they got the square window the same time as the ROW. But in Brazil they continued making ovals until 59.

August 1, 1957 is the official start of the big rear window in German Beetles. Some early big window Beetles, especially Euro Beetles, were registered as 1957 Beetles since that is the year they were built and they registered by manufacture year, not by model year.

VW changed it's model year from jan 1 to aug 1 in 1955 to get in line with the North American model year policy. That means the '55 model year extended from 1 jan 55 to 31 july 55 making it the shortest model year. A car made after 1 aug 57 is considered a 58 model.

Correct me if i'm wrong but wasn't the 67' a six month only model? At least it was in the UK with 68' model starting in the August of 67'.

The '53 oval had the shortest production run. It was only 6 months.

i remember back during the poverty day's of vw plannet, the was a
big window 57 for sale in the classifieds. if i remember right, it was
silver, or a bluish color, that was listed on for quite somtime.

Hmmm, March 53 to Dec 53. Let's see, Apr, May, June, July, Aug, Sept, Oct, Nov, Dec. That's 9 months by my count, not including Mar. Didn't do too well in grade 1 did you? :lol:

jan 1,1955-july 31,1955 is seven months for 1955 beetles :wink:
