View original topic: Replacing gen with alt

OK, my generator has decided to die again. I have an alternator from a later Beetle. I was wondering if I can use my current voltage regulator, and do I have to change out other stuff too?
Oh, and it is a stock dual port 1971 1600.

If u want to replace the gen with an alt u dont need the regulator anymore. The alt has a built in regulator. On ur voltage regulator u will have to connect all the power wires and then connect the blue and the green wires together to bypass the regulator. thats it.. should work fine after that. I put an alt in my 69.

He will need a regulator IF he uses the original factory Motorola alternator. The regulator mounts under the rear seat.
If he uses a Bosch replacement alt with a built-in regulator, then your reply is valid.
But he did say he has 'an alternator from a later Beetle'....
The Bosch internal regulator alternator has a B+ post and a spade connector for the blue wire.
The Motorola has a B+ post and a 3 wire connecter from the regulator.

Yep - aufever is right - the first VW alternators - up to mid 73, had an external regulator and have three wires coming out of them. The regulator is NOT the same as the generator regulator, since generators have to regulate VOLTAGE and alternators have to regulate CURRENT.

The later internal regulated alternator (with two wires) is an easier fit - go to Speedy Jims pages for more info on both type's conversion.
