I was wondering what was involved and if it is possible to put a ball joint beam in a link pin car. I also was wondering how hard it is to install avis adjusters. any help would be great thanks david mcpeal

Scooter Fri Mar 07, 2003 11:49 pm

you need to weld in the adjusters, so that means you need to take out the springs and the front beam, i am not sure if you can use a ball joint, seems like you should be able to but if you can just buy a beam with the adjusters already welded in.

scott, quit answering questions you don't know about. You Jakup wannabe.

A linkpin Pan needs a different Frame head for a ball joint front end. Not too difficult if the body and pan are seperated. you can lower your stock beam with avis adjusters, but there is welding involved. It may be easier for you to buy a bare Adj beam, and install all of your parts. If you want a smoother ride use drop spindles instead of an Adj beam

So I was right except for the ball joint into a linkpin beam, sorry that I didnt say I wasnt sure.

Hey thanks guys I can weld but I just don't know how involved it is to weld the avis adjusters in. Are they like the other adjuster where you have to cut the beam or do you just cut a notch in the beam and weld on the adjuster any help would be great and thanks again.

Hey gw1718,
Just curious if you went with the Avis Adjusters and if you installed them? I just order some and no one seems to know much about the installation. As soon as they arrive I will post some instructions for installation, My front end is completly disassembled and waiting for the new Ajusters, Ball Joints, Tie Rod Ends, Steering Dampner, Bushings..etc. Let me know if you figured anything out.

jeremyrockjock Tue Jun 03, 2003 12:32 pm

Where did you order the avis adjusters from? -Jeremy

SlugBug72 Tue Jun 03, 2003 6:07 pm

I ordered from Moore Performance at www.mooreparts.com
I usually order from www.cip1.com, but they were out of stock on most the items I needed. So I'll give Moore a shot. I believe they were about $12 a piece. Have you insatlled a set or are just thinking about using them?

jeremyrockjock Wed Jun 04, 2003 3:52 am

I have never installed the avis style but I know how they are done. I have experience with the sway away style. I do want to try the avis just because you don't actually cut throught the entire beam. I think they are much safer in the long run.-Jeremy

jeremyrockjock Wed Jun 04, 2003 4:00 am

I looked at cip.com and all I saw were the sway away style. Mooreparts.com does show a picture so I'm not sure what that one is. Heres the only Avis adjusters I can find. They cost alot more. If you know somewhere else that has them cheaper please let me know.-Jeremy

Yikes...Expensive is right

www.mooreautoparts.com $12.00 each
www.pacificcustoms.com $12.00 each
www.kustom1warehouse.com $12.00 each

Latest Rage 619-445-7553
$12.00 each
Most have the same Part No.s as listed below...
Part No. AC401103 For Ball-Joint Front Ends
Part No. AC401102 For King & Link Pin Front Ends
Part No. AC401102A For Alumminum Front Ends

I don't know if there are pics on the web pages, but I am looking at the June issue of hot VWs and all the above links I listed have pics of the Avis adjusters in the magazine. They all look the same, there's not much to them. They look exactly like the link you posted. Hope this helps.

jeremyrockjock Fri Jun 06, 2003 6:20 am

Your right! They are the same type and are $12.00. Thanks man. You'd have to be nuts to spend $80 on them.-Jeremy

Good luck man...oh and word the wise, the camber is messed up when you lower a bug, so you must get "castor shims" for the front beam, makes a big difference on the highway...Peace!

Well, I just recieved my order from www.mooreparts.com
Pretty fast shipping and good prices. I have enough parts to finsih the front a rear ends now. All new tie rods, ball joints, shocks, shift coupler, shift rod bushing, steering dampner, steering coupler, caster shims, carb kit, clutch and accelerator cables, chrome torsion covers and yes finally my Avis Adjusters :) and guess what......no instructions :( I dropped an E-Mail to them ,so hopefully they will E-Mail or fax me some instructions. As soon as I get them I will post them for eveyone wondering about them. I will also take pics as I instal them for reference.
Ohh James thanks for the info and pics, but those don't look like Avis Adjusters. I enjoyed reading about your VW's though.
Later,
Paul

The installation goes as follows. First dissasemble your front suspension. Pull the torsion bars out. Next mark the centerline of where the original setscrew hole( x and y coordinates) Cut the tube of the beam the same width as the adjuster, and then fit the adjuster, and index the slot so that the travel of the torsion holder is to your desired spec. Then weld in the adjuster. Make sure that the weld is a good one as this very structural and is also how the grease stays in the beam. You can install the torsion bars before you weld it all back together and use your trailing arms to help in keeping all of the parts aligned before you finish welding the adjuster in place.

The above is a link the pic of what parts I have. I have called all 3 VW shops here in Fresno and got 3 different answers for installation. One even said I have to take the axle in to be machined??? I am lost. I do know how to weld and can do it myself if I just had some clarification.
ODCUSTOMS..thanks for the input check out the pic and verify I have the right stuff. Thanks Again for your help, it's greatly appreciated.

I got some responses from people. Someone is supposed to fax me instructions and I also dropped Gene Berg an E-Mail. Will see what happens. I will keep those of you who also are interested in this informed.

ODCUSTOMS Tue Jun 10, 2003 11:31 pm

I have used the sway away style in the past, and I make my own now, but have had a couple of bad experiences with that style of adjuster( mainly on bus beams) in the past so that is why I find its easier and cheaper to just fab up a set. You will need to either remove one end bearing or cut the tube though to install the new floating torsion holder. Your tubes are crimped to index the original holder and unless you replace these pieces in one way or another you wont be able to fit a perfectly round holder in a crimped tube

SlugBug72 Wed Jun 11, 2003 12:07 am

I noticed that my beam has the peens in it. I wasn't sure how to "free up" the old torsion holder. One place I called said I just need to break it loose then move it to the side, cut the slot weld in the serated plate then slide the old torsion holder back over to the center. Which would mean I wouldn't have to use the new torsion holder. Or like you said take out the needle bearings, take out the old torsion holder then slide the new one in. Which isn't a problem I should probaably replace those bearings as I've replaced everything else. You know what suck is the place I bought them has no clue and my local VW shop SEBRING WEST!!!! where I spend lots and lots of money told me this, "we know how to install Avis Adjusters, our tech guy has been here 30 years and is VW Certified...He makes his living working on VW's so he's not just gonna tell you how to do it." Needless to say they will not be seeing anymore of my money..
