i was just tuning up my 61 bug. when it came time to rebuild the carb i did that.
reinstalled it fired up the car and got it to idle real nice. but here are my issues.
there is a slow but constant drip from the main jet. i tightened it pretty tight which helped but still this slow drip continues i replaced the washer that goes there im not sure if i should just use one of the rubber gaskets i have in the kit to seal that up or if it would screw up the jets position...
also it idles really nicely but when i rev the engine up and then let the rpms fall it dies. this is driving me crazy
ive been tweaking with the idle because i feel like it revs up and as the rpm comes down it dies because its running rich but im no carb pro.
i know these issues are kinda obscure and i hope i was clear enough for you guys to help me out.
i really appreciate any help |

When I did mine it had all kinds of problems but I had done the fuel rebuild at the same time and all the problems stemmed from too heavy of a spring in the fuel pump rebuild kit causing a excessive fuel pressure.
Check to make sure that with the choke off theres no fuel dripping from the discharge nozzle on idle. |

Check your fuel pressure with an inline gauge like this one:
http://www.harborfreight.com/fuel-pump-and-vacuum-tester-93547.html
You should only have 2-3psi. Adjust with the gaskets under the pump. |

the gaskets under the entire unit or the under the upper half? |

Under the entire pump, between the pump and its bakelite base. |

Found this photo from my Double Cab where I added some extra gaskets - hope this helps visualize things:
(Click for full size photo)
I use that same Harbor Freight gauge to check my pressure. |

Ev, is that a 009? For shame!
I have what looks to be that same pump, and I had to use a super thick gasket also. |

ok so i got the fuel pressure gauge got some some gaskets for adjusting. slapped on the gauge in place of my fuel filter to check the pressure.
it was at a constant 2 which i know is good like 2 to 3. so i proceeded to adjust my carb some more get a good idle. i did. when i rev it up it sounds great. then when i let it go it just peders out. i dont know whats up.
i got it to the point to where it can rev up and once its settling again it sounds like it wants to die but if i give it gas again then it corrects. so i decided to take it for a drive. i would rev it up to engage the clutch and it would just bog down and die...
my first thought is i should rebuild the fuel pump to get a solid 3 psi or so. im not a mechanical genius by any means im at a loss.
if there are any ideas you guys have i would really appreciate it |

As long as your carb bowl is staying full you're fine. I don't think the problem you are having is due to a lack of fuel. Usually fuel starvation happens when it's heavily loaded not when you are backing off on the throttle/coasting or idling. But you can check for that by getting it to the point where it stumbles on you and immediately turn the engine off and coast somewhere safe to work on the car... take the air cleaner and top half of the carb off and see how much fuel is in the bowl. If it's full enough for the float to be floating level, then fuel supply is not the problem.

i will definitely check that out before going for the pump rebuild.
i would definitely do the coast to a safe place to work on it thing but right now i cant even get it fully into gear because i rev the engine engage the clutch and it just dies off. i dont know whats up |

I just found this thread I'm experiencing similar issue on a Karman Ghia. After a Carb rebuild, the idle is great but when I rev it the engine stumbles. Sounds like its being flooded? |
