I replaced my oil cooler in my 69 with a 1500cc engine. I was told to use the adapter seals and then it leaks. I replaced the seals with the straight ones ( I think 8mm or 10mm not sure) does anyone have any suggestions? what type of seals does the 1500cc have? I have tried both types and I still have oil coming down the top left of the engine.

If your engine is a stock H case with the stock steel (non doghouse) cooler than you need to use the 2 shortest straight round, (no -"lip") style seals... I would say they are usually black in color but with all the variances in gasket sets they could be pinkish red or grey.
You could have a bad cooler or cracks in the case are common in that area.
Oil cooler/ seal leaks are no fun and perhaps one of the most frustrating to solve without alot of experience.
best of luck...

i got a new cooler with the 10mm holes
I still cant figure out why the new converter plugs are not holding the dam oil in any ideas?

i have a regular cooler and the seals I changed twice from one with the straight p and down seals then the old that I pulled out look like the stepped ones. That leaked now I just am fed up with it and replaced the cooler with the stepped 8 to ten mm seals. Why would it leak? any expert advice will be praised

Here is a website that may help:

Well, since you did not say you replaced the cooler with one with bigger holes then disreguard my post. All along I thought you were saying it was OG 69 parts...(ie cooler with 8mm holes)

The green colored adaptor seals should work for you. if you have a leak your either installing/ tightening things up wrong or the case may have a crack.

What are you doing with the copper washers that come in the package with the green seals, and are you trying to use any sealant/ silicone on them?

majohnson@hartford.edu Sun Mar 23, 2003 11:10 am

should i use some sealant? What should I do then? I didnt use any sealant? What would u do?

keifernet Sun Mar 23, 2003 11:30 am

No, I personally do not use sealant and do not have leaks, I use a thin smear of regular ( brownish golden) wheel bearing grease on them. And I do not use those copper washers either...
Are you changing them with the engine in the car, decklid/hinges off to get the fan housing off? and the manifold/ cylinder tin still in the way? if so BUMMER, what a pain in the ass, I prefer to drop the engine, seems like more work but can end up saving time.
Plus the tin in the way could be giving you trouble tightening the thing down.
Was it a new or "reconne" cooler?

majohnson@hartford.edu Sun Mar 23, 2003 1:22 pm

It was a new cooler and was done in the car. They were tight and I too did not use the copper washers and NO i used nothing just put them in. The cooler has a 10mm hole from what I was told and then the seals had a smaller and then larger side to them I am not sure what color they were but I think they were these

but what if the seals are ten mm all round that could be the cause of my problems?? What you think?

majohnson@hartford.edu Sun Mar 23, 2003 1:23 pm

i mean say my case has 10mm holes so does the cooler i need different seals? What could i use to measure the case holes?

keifernet Sun Mar 23, 2003 1:31 pm

Well, those are the seals I was reffering to, they adapt the early 8mm holes in 69 and earlier cases to the 10mm steel or the "doghouse" cooler adapter and vise-versa.
if you made sure you put the smaller side 8mm to the case and the bigger 8mm to the cooler, and tightened everything EVENLY and snug then you should be fine. Unless youo have another problem like a crack or stuck oil releif valve and too much pressure.
I'd like to help you more but there is only so much you can do from a keyboard.
take it apart and keep at it... look things over real good... best of luck getting it sorted out.

If the relief valve was broken how could I fix that? I am going to take it apart again and see what is going on.

majohnson@hartford.edu Mon Mar 24, 2003 9:16 am

isnt that on the bottom of the engine?

keifernet Mon Mar 24, 2003 9:31 am

Yes on the bottom of the engine, an "H" case is single releif and it is up front by the oil pump area. Undo the big screw and pull out the spring, the piston should fall out too, if not it could be sticky/sticking so get a magnet or a piece of wooden dowel or a 10mm tap and pull it out, clean it with emery or wet dry sandpaper and lube it up and make sure it travels freely in the bore.

But still, this may or may not be the root cause of your leak...

majohnson@hartford.edu Mon Mar 24, 2003 9:41 am

ok thanks for your help. should I purchase a new valve? What else could it be? Seems odd that I just put in the new cooler and the seals maybe it was not all even like you said.
