View original topic: transmission question (65)

my bug has been sitting for about 5 years, so I thought I'd drain the trans, clean it, and refill it. Is this a (dumb question) bad idea for the DIY-mechanic, and if not, any tips? Also, what should I put back in it?

Yes you should drain the trans and put fresh oil in it.

It takes 2.5 litres (5.3US pints).

Loosen the filler plug before you remove the drain plug - just to be sure you CAN fill it again (stuck plugs are no fun). Fill it until it drips out the filler hole - that's the correct 2.5 litres.

80w90 or 85w90 Hypoid gear oil is the right stuff (Castrol Transaxle or similar).

You can also use synthetic 75w90 gear oil to good effect - it stays in the tranny for 30,000 miles so it's long-lasting properties get a workout. It also helps in cold climates with cold-car gear changes (the 75 "cold" number). (Castrol Transsynth - or is it Synthtrans - I forget....or similar)

There used to be a problem with the GL5 rated oils. The first GL5 was slightly corrosive (when hot) on the bronze components in VW gearboxes but they quickly fixed that and you'd be VERY unlucky to find any of the original GL5 now. If you want to check, look for GL5-MT1 on the pack or in the product description on the oil company's web site. If MT1 appears anywhere in the description of the GL5 oil - it's OK.

The older GL4 standard is just fine too.
