stock 1600=46 HP
1641=47-48 HP
1776=60 HP
1835=65 HP (until the cylinders lose compresison)
The above numbers are from various VW engine dyno test books, except 1600 cc which is the original factory rating.
009 will not get you anymore HP but Kadron/Weber carbs, header, mild cam and most of all-good cylinder heads can boost HP all the way up to 100 or more. |

| most of the guys in the performance forum could tell ya, they really recommend against the 1835 due to reliability concerns. the 92mm cylinder walls are thin, and they dont last nearly as long as the 90.5 (1776) or 94 (1915). Most of the people I talk to recommend the 1776 out of the three. |

correct me if i am wrong but aren't 1600's 60hp?
If so I would assume the numbers would be more like this:
1600=60HP
1641=62-70
1776= 70-and up
1835 = 80-and up |

| I think the confusion began back in the '70s was when HP suddenly was expressed as brake HP, therefore a 60 HP 1600 suddenly became a 46 HP overnight. I remember the shock when I bought a new '74 Beetle with 1600 cc and found out that it was only 46 HP...this was a non-CA model with little emissions control equipment on it too. |

Wow.... you learn something new everyday!
Thats why i love these forums...
I thought there was almost a 20HP difference from a 1300 to a 1600.... Boy was i wrong...
1300 = 36-38 Right????
1600 = 46 So only 10HP Not 20 Difference? |

As an aside, I purchased an original '68 Beetle with the 1500 cc engine and only 27,000 miles on it...this was a few years ago. Anyway, it was amazing how quick that Beetle was...certainly quicker than any 1600 cc dual-port that I've owned. The top end was slightly slower (80 mph vs. 85) but it sure was torquey!
By the way, what Passat do you own?...mines a 1.8T. |
