does anyone know a "safe" temperature range for the cylinder heads on a beetle? whats the maximum i should let them get up to. sometimes luggin up the mountains they get pretty hot and i wanted to know how much damage i might be doing. thanks

Ask this question on the cal-look.com forum or search there...it's been discussed before by those who regularly check head temps.

The max recommended temp for the heads is Around 400f (205c), and better to keep it below that.

400f is the limit used by most avaition types flying behind VW engines.

The "normal" operating range of the VW heads is about 165f - 300f (130-150c) with shorter periods up to about 375f (190c).

my temperature gauge under normal driving conditions shows about 325 F. is there anything i can do to get this temperature down? when im on the freeway at about 70 mph it gets around 350F. im gonna look into sealing all the gaps in the cooling tin and i think i am missing a few parts. if anyone has any ideas let me know

Yes - check the cooling tin - you need ALL of it to work well.

That includes the flat plate delfectors under the cylindfers, plus the smaller ones under the heads - without these the undersides get very little cooling - the air just spills down between the cylinders.

There are two vertical pieces behind the rear (rear is rear of car) cylinders too - bolts to the rear edge of the upper tins - these direct air THROUGH the fins on the rear of the rear cylinders.

You should have the thermostat and cooling flaps too - the flaps help with a fast warm-up, and when open, they also provide a separate air path to the heads and cylinders, so the cylinders aren't over cooled and the heads aren't under cooled.

The rubber washers around the plugs are vital too - without them you can count on about 25f higher head temps.

If the plug wires are not clipped to the shroud there will be some small holes in it - plug those.

Are you sure the temp sensor is accurate - it might be over reading in the first place.
