Hey everyone, I had a problem tonight when I tried to put on my header. The j-tubes interfere with those little tins that run under the pushrod tubes... is this normal??? Also when I put the tubes for the other side of the header, they ran into the engine seal. If I take these tins off, will it affect my cooling in a major way? Any help would be great.

Don't take em off, unless you want a really really hot running engine. They help circulate the air across the bottom of the cylinders. I would suggest, if all else, rebending in some way the route your tubes run. I used to run j-tubes and had no problem, prolly because the person I bought the vehicle from altered the positioning of the tubes. Good luck.

Update. I took them off and the tubes will run right into the thermostat! Should I just get a new header and not deal with all the trouble???

The guy I bought it from e-mailed me today and said that it is supposed to be used without a thermostat, should I take off my thermostat or just send it back??? He also said that they were supposed to run under the pushrods, should I drill a hole in the tin or will this just create a heating problem because the heat from the header??? Please help!

Hello again, I got the heater boxes off but now I am having trouble with removing the tin under the pushrods. I have to take it off because of the header, but I can't seem to figure it out. There are two screws attached at the top, but I looked behind the fan shroud and can't see them from there. I pretty much just jacked up the tin below the pushrod tubes because i tried to cut it. If anyone could please help me that would be cool!!!!!!

Dude are you sure you have the right parts? I have never heard of anyone having to do any of the things you are doing.
Those tins under the cylinders need to stay ON. You'll grenade your engine without them. |

your j-tubes shouldn't get in the way of your pushrod tubes or thermostat, period. don't mess with the cooling tin, mess with the j-tubes. you can either a) rebend the j-tubes to clear the tin, or b) buy another set of j-tubes that fit better. not all j-tubes are created equal. the differnece between good j-tubes and crap is less than $10, so save yourself the headaches and buy a decent set. Also, if anyone at a vw shop advises you that an exhaust is designed to work without a thermostat, find a new shop to deal with.

That sucks a lot! I already skrewed up one of those tins so I guess I need to buy some more of those and a new header! The end of the header goes under the pushrods so even if I get new j-tubes it won't do anything. Thank you guys for the help!
