I finally got my engine back together and went to start it up. When we did it barely started over and we thought it was the battery. I am trying to figure out what could be causing this. I replaced the battery and the starter. My partner thinks it could be that the flywhell is catching the tranny or even worse. That the person who gave me the crank, gave me the wrong bearings. Does anyone have any ideas. By the way, we have gotten it started a few times, but barely.

how did you assemble the engine? Did you just slap all the parts back together, or did you take your time and check all the clearances, etc? Does the engine have the same flywheel that was on it before? Could you turn it over by hand before and after you put the flywheel on? Is the end play set right? Is the timing set right, fuel pump working. did you replace the cap, rotor, and points. There are tons of things that can be wrong - you just have to go through each one until you figure it out.
BTW if the engine has started its almost always a timing problem.
Start with the easy things
check the fuel pump and coil.
reset the timing and try to start it

after it starts does it run smooth or does it make any noises it shouldn't
good luck

the engine acts almost like a dead battery. like it is hard to turn over. We tried the same battery in another car and it turned over just fine. My partner thinks it is binding somewhere on the tranny. We have gotten it started and the timing is fixed up, but still hard to turn over. We did take our time. The crank is a little stiff. The engine does have the same flywheel. Any help will be appreciated. Oh I have electric ignition. I did away with the points. I will say that the valves do need adjusting though.
