I have a problem w/my 73 beetle fuel pump. I have a 20 year old worn out fuel pump that will work with the vehicle, however it's old and tired and constantly is failing and needs to be fiddled with to get it working again (It's the sealed kind). My problem is I want my vehicle to be more reliable and to that end have purchased 3 new fuel pumps, none of which will work. I believe the problem has to be one of the following: push rod is worn or the cam is worn. My bug has a rebuilt 1600 in it with about 15K on it to date, so I don't believe it is the cam. Does anyone know the length specs for the pushrod? I have read that it is supposed to extend 1/2 an inch above the flange when fully extended, and mine only comes up about 1/4 of an inch. I can't find any specs on what the actually push rod length is supposed to be. I have pulled the push rod and can't see any real signs of wear.

Also, what is the consensus of putting in a block off plate and mounting an electric fuel pump and just canning the mechanical pump option all together?

Please help, I am very frustrated and tired of having to rip my fuel pump off on the side of the road and reset the lever and spring.
