My 1641 dual 40 dell engine has 600 miles on it. I dont want to be ruining its life by going a little fast too soon... How many miles should i have before putting some work on the engine? THanks

600 miles is enough. Your rings should be almost be completely seated by now.
Go and change you oil before you put any real load on the engine tho. I like to break in an engine by taking it on the freeway. start out at 55, then push it to 65 for a few seconds. back off to 60 then go to 70. down to 65 then to 75. keep doing this for a few seconds at the higher speed then give it about a minute at the lower speed. Once you hit 80 leave it there for about 10-15 seconds. then back it down to about 60. After that stop and let the engine cool off. If you have an oil temp guage keep watching it cause this will probably shoot the oil temp way up. When I did this to the 1915 in my 64 it took maybe 5 minutes total and the oil temp was almost 220. After that It would cruise at 75 and the oil temp would never hit 200. Just remember not to push it too hard, If you dont think it will go that fast then don't do it. This will also work over time. like one day go 65 for a few seconds, the next 75. Just do what your comfortable with.
