View original topic: Need help identifying this buggy...
tbowen1020 Sat Feb 26, 2011 9:41 am

I just picked this up the other day and am having a little trouble identifying it. Anyone have any thoughts on what it might be? I was not able to find any marks or plates that would tell me anything. It is built on a 63 chassis. I'd like to get as much info before I start the disassembly and restoration.

Thanks in advance.

Possible from Dune Buggy Archives site...

Hill Engineering T Buggy

or

Looks like a hillbilly hottub to me.

looks like a kellison Sandpiper Pickup

I don't remember Kellison ever building a long wheelbase pickup. All the ones I have seen were the short wheelbase.
Did see one that have been stretched, had plywood sides and glass on top of body was not finished very well.

That is pretty cool, looks like an instant parade float. Really has some potential with that large flat area. What is under the flat area?

I can't help you with the ID, but I can tell you that you got a very cool looking looooooong buggy!! :D

It's just begging for some kind of Mid-engine powerplant.

I think a Kellison would have a removable hood. It doesn't look as if there is a removable hood in the picture.

Kellison did have a long and a short pickup.
There are several clones, but with the shape
of the rear fenders, I think its real. If you have
a picture of the "tailgate" it would help. Real
Kellisons have a raised ridge that forms a
rectangle on the back. It was actually molded
from a model "a" ford tailgate. Either way it
looks to be in great shape. A lot better than
mine started out.

Thanks to all who made suggestions. As far as hillbilly hottub goes, the back is full of water with no drain and that is a coors light beer can back there so it is a possibility. The body is a one piece with no removable panels. Under the large flat area is the gas tank, the battery and of course the transaxle and engine. The back panel is flat with no turn under at the bottom and no ridge around the back. Also the hump appears larger than the ones in the Kellison pics. So I'm going to go with the Hill Engineering Buggy. I'll be starting disassembly soon and will hopefully have time to post a new thread with the teardown and rebuild pics. It will be getting a full sand and repaint, new floorboards and all mechanicals rebuilt. I cant wait to get it back on the road. Now does anyone know where I can score a Hill Engineering two-seater hardtop to buy or clone for this thing?

Here is mine...full length pan, long bed, stamped FORD on the back.

anyone with any info or literature please let me know I'd love some more history on these...can't find many like it online and most of my connections have never seen one.

It would make an excellent beer cooler truck for a buggy run.

there is one of these for sale on my local craigslist it was never finished I looked all over dba and other identifying sights and could not find anything on this style. It looks cool but I wasn't sure about the non removable parts. keep us posted on your build and remember pictures are our friends. good luck

I don't know what it is, but it doesn't really matter does it. Mine is an el lobo or loboish body and i researched it forever. Didn't make any real difference, it's still my one off buggy. Whatever it is, it has great potential. I'm imagining a full length soft top like a suburban, with roll up side curtains like a transporter.

Forgot I had even posted this topic untill you guys brought it back to life recently. :)

I did manage to pull the body of the buggy off. the pan was too far gone so I sourced a new one someone was setting up for a kitcar. It is a full wheelbase and has the lowerd flat pans installed. I blasted it down to metal and sprayed POR-15 on it.

I have sanded the body down and started accumulating parts for it. So far have several sets of rims. I am rebuilding a dual port motor with a few go fast goodies on it. Bought a pair of off road seats. Still need a windshield, lights, and a hardtop for it. Once I have everything I'll put the body in the booth for a nice thick coat of electric green paint. and start reassembly. I'll post again once the body is painted.

Trouble is... I got distracted by a couple of other ones I nabbed in the meantime.

The black one is a Koyote according to its label. Looks to be a lot of fun once I track down a windshield and decide which way to go with the interior.

Absolutely no earthly idea what the purple one is. Anyone seen one of these before? Not sure what I am going to do with it but for now it's under a cover in the back lot.

manxdavid Tue Jul 10, 2012 12:03 pm

The purple one's a Volkaro.
